You know every show that the premise is like "people find out ghosts/monsters/demons are real and are charged with stopping them" appeal to me way more now as a post-graduate not because I believe in ghosts more or whatever but because can you IMAGINE just being handed a job that you don't even need to apply for? Like just being told "basically there's this bad thing and all you do is make sure it doesn't do what it wants" that's just customer service baby and I worked that for 6 goddamn years! Just TRY getting past "I have a job to offer you" before I can jump down your throat agreeing.

some idiot with a dumb ghost-hunting name who joined the Cause because they love the paranormal: oh fuck oh shit this is really scary guys I'm having second thoughts

me, who knows that if we run away I have to apply to like, a real actual Jobbe again: wakey wakey demons it's this or retail so guess who's got nothing to lose

does anyone know of a supplier of customized badge ribbons like these that is *not* a US company?
Three adhesive badge ribbons, meant to be affixed to a convention membership badge. These ones are for "Tampere 2032 - Another Finnish Worldcon," featuring a dolphin wearing a space helmet, "Spokane In 2015," and "Minneapolis in 2073 - The 131st Worldcon," featuring an airship with MPLS 2073 written on the side.

reposting with alt text because this is a great idea that I would be 100% behind. my only concern is that merely digging him up doesn't go far enough. put his skeleton on trial for his role in the genocide.
An article from the December 11, 1978 Toronto Star, headlined "Indians threaten to dig up Sir John A."

OTTAWA (CP) - An Indian leader has threatened to dig up the remains of Sir John Macdonald, one of the founders of Confederation, to protest the desecration of Indian burial grounds by archaeologists.

"Let's see how white people feel about that," Alex Akiwenzie of the Nations of Warriors said in a weekend interview. "We are trying to raise the level of consciousness among Indian and non-Indian alike."

Macdonald, the country's first prime minister, died in 1891 and is buried in Kingston.

At the Cataraqui cemetery where Sir John's remains lie marked by an undistinguished 3-foot headstone, cemetery manager John Howard was not unduly alarmed about the threat today.

Howard suggested that if the threat really was a serious one then police would be asked to post a guard, but he said: "I understand Sir John is buried in reinforced concrete. So that wouldn't be easy to get through."

He said the grave has never been desecrated.

Akiewenzie and fellow member Douglas Pine recently walked from Windsor to Toronto to protest highway construction that would cut through part of a 1,000-year-old burial site in Windsor.

"They're dealing with our spirits," he said. "Nothing is really sacred any more when they desecrate our burial grounds. We just want them left alone."

He wants legislation to protect Indian burial grounds but he said he was not well-received by provincial authorities in Toronto following a protest march.

"Now I want to speak to federal politicians but if I don't get satisfaction soon, I will dig up Sir John."

Although museum officials in Ontario last year promised Indians that no more burial grounds would be dug up without consultation with local bands, Akiwenzie said the Windsor dig has continued over protests.

"They were after us alive and now they're after us dead," he said. "We just can't seem to escape."

reposting with alt text. hollering works. though I am a bit 🤨, because to my knowledge this didn't appear to be an issue with the previous Dell contracts
A Statement on Copyright Retention Instead of "Work-for-Hire" Cover Illustrations at MRM

We previously commissioned illustrators to create covers as work-for-hire when they were asked to adapt authors' original stories for elements such as cover art.

This will be changing.

The rights granted to MRM by authors are limited, and therefore we can't protect the intellectual property and rights of the original author of the story, if we at the same time grant the authors' rights to the illustrator so that the illustrator can then retain an adaptation copyright. We don't acquire rights from authors that allow us to grant illustrators broad unencumbered use of the worlds, characters, and other elements created by the author.

We're planning to pause cover contracts based on specific stories for the foreseeable future while we figure out the best way forward with those kinds of commissions.

We prefer a process that will both feel fair to illustrators and protect the story authors' copyright.

To that end, we can license existing art or license new original art for our covers (not based on a story) with contracts for illustrators where the artist clearly retains the copyright in the underlying image, since there are no underlying rights owned by authors of the stories that are a part of these kinds of original works.

Regarding retention of "moral rights" in illustrations: our licensing agreements for original art and original fiction use language prepared by an international IP attorney based on notes we received from SFWA's contracts committee. These kinds of agreements no longer include a waiver of moral rights.

We always appreciate when contributors to the magazines express their concerns.

"Hello my urine Angels. Question for you. Has anyone else out there sprayed aged urine in their hair for deep conditioning, healing from harsh tap water in shower, and reverse greying?

I've always liked "humans are daredevils"
underscorex: It's usually done so humans are presented as "average". In my conception, humans are the daredevils. The one thing a human loves more than watching another human do something horribly unsafe is doing something unsafe themselves.

It's said that the stout and serious dwarves invented the first staircase, but it was a human who came up with the idea of surfing down the staircase on an oaken shield.

Elves have lived in the great Hometree overlooking the Mother River for untold ages. It was a human who first had the idea to jump out of the tree and into the river.

That's the other thing - dwarves are stout and hardy, but like the stone they came from, once they break, they're broken. Humans recover impossibly fast by the standards of other races. They're also the first ones to get up after an explosion or cave-in, with a cheerful "I'm okay!" They can't take as much as a dwarf, but nobody beats humans at getting back up again and again and again for more punishment.

The Hobbits appreciate Human vigor, their good cheer, and certainly their lusty appetite for food and drink, but the utter glee with which humans will attempt to harm themselves or their fellows in a misguided attempt at "fun" is horrifying. Their rituals and celebration - they let themselves be charged by bulls! - are seen as a testament to human ingenuity, creativity, and utter lack of good sense.

The humans who are most highly regarded by their peers are those who excel at SOMETHING. Dancing, throwing, singing, fighting - humans love watching other humans be excellent at things, even something otherwise pointless and wasteful, like throwing knitting needles into melons.

They are, to a fault, resilient. No Elves would DARE return to a failed settlement. The land is cursed and the dead walk there. Humans will rebuild the same castle over again with the same standing stones.

TL;DR - only humans would invent the X-Games.
