RAW File vs. JPEG: What You Actually Lose Shooting JPEG Only
Whenever you photograph a scene or a person, there are two ways your camera can process the details. In one, you get a compressed, color-corrected image; in the other, the image is unprocessed, unfiltered, and looks bland. The first, which is only a few megabytes, is called a JPEG, while the second, which most professionals choose, is a RAW file. The RAW file is where photographers have yet to make a decision on how the photo will look. Those who shoot JPEG only rely on the camera to make those decisions for them. But the RAW file is where most of the magic happens. Here's a quick guide to the two.

Photography Composition Rules: What Is the Rule of Thirds, and When Should You Break It?
Image-makers always have to learn about photography composition rules before they begin their journey. For many, it is much like how painters are pushed to perfect their vision by laying down grids to figure out the placement of elements in a harmonious way. If you are new to the medium, learning something basic, such as the rule of thirds, is a great start. And once you figure it out, you can always break it to create something impressive.

How to Actually Read a Histogram
When it comes to digital photography, there are a few things that one has to keep in mind. They not only have to learn about the device, but also the kind of tools it can offer. For most photographers, for example, their LCD is the best option to judge the exposure of the scene they are shooting. However, the problem is that the brightness of a screen can be quite unreliable in the longer run. In that regard, relying on a histogram is a great solution to fix this issue. Here's how one can utilize this for their next assignment.

Nikon S2 Review: A 70 Year Old Rangefinder That Still Shoots Great
Beautifully engineered mechanical design, with a supremely accurate rangefinder and looks that still turn heads, the Nikon S2 is a camera that can bring you oodles of joy even today. Without any electronics in it whatsoever, it still manages to churn out one great image after another. More than anything, the Nikon S2 proves that good photography fundamentals don't age. Give a photographer a reliable camera, a good lens and a roll of film and you can still create images that go wow.

What Apertures Do You Get The Sharpest Images At For Your Camera Sensor?
Most young photographers often run into the same puzzle: how to get sharp images, without making it look too sharp. When you shoot wide open, there is some softness, and when you push past a certain number, it results in fracture. There is a sweet spot of the lens, where it delivers its sharpest possible image. Understanding this spot, and figuring out how to do this with your gear, then here are a few things you have to keep in mind.

Gen Z is Returning to Film: a Rejection of Optimized Hype and Staged Perfection
We are living in a world where everyone not only has a camera in their pocket, but what was once a sci-fi supercomputer capable of completely altering reality. For Gen Z, the first generation of digital-only natives, it may seem like a quirky trend buying 40+-year-old cameras, but the truth is something far more refreshing: It’s a calculated retreat from the frictionless, hyper-optimized, and clinically sterile nature of our digital world. I reached out to Gen Z photographers from Reddit’s r/AnalogCommunity to get their thoughts on the matter.

The Sony Kit Behind Sitti’s Stunning Street Photography
Street photography showcases the most mundane things in a visually striking way. A large part of this comes down to the photographer's ability to observe moments that often go unnoticed by an untrained eye. One example is Sittichai Maikupandin's surreal visuals of Bangkok, which make us see our reality in a different way. "Amidst the chaos of the city, I try to capture something that may seem ordinary, yet somehow evokes a feeling that cannot be easily explained," he once wrote about his work. Today, he speaks with The Phoblographer about the gear that makes it all possible.

Sony a7 III Review in 2026: Is it Still Worth Buying?
As we approach a decade of the Sony a7 III's existence, it’s time to dive back into it and see if it’s still worth buying Sony’s oldest supported model. With an aging 24-megapixel sensor and "outdated" autofocusing system, the a7III may no longer be built for work, but it shines for everything else. It wasn’t until last year that Sony officially discontinued the Sony a7 II, arguably the model that changed photographers’ perception of the brand and what it meant to be a camera design for pros. When Sony launched the a7 III (also called the Sony a7III) in 2018, it kicked off the AF debates that we still must put up with on Reddit to this day. Here's how it stacks up in 2026.

Alexander James Hamilton Turns Water and Light Into Photographs Shot on Film
Have you ever seen an image that leaves you questioning reality? For instance, many pictures depict our surroundings in a way that makes the familiar feel unreal. Some may reflect on history, while others challenge how we see the world and deepen our appreciation of it. Alexander James Hamilton's work belongs to the latter group, where the real and the imagined collide to produce visuals that are breathtaking but also thought-provoking. "Everything visible in my work had to exist physically before the camera," Hamilton said in our interview. "The photograph is the physical record of what occurred."

12-Bit vs. 14-Bit RAW: Does the Extra Bit Depth Actually Show Up in a Photo?
If you're the type of photographer who cares a lot about post-production, then 14-Bit RAW is something that you probably always use. 14-bit RAW images hold a lot more information in them than 12-bit RAW images. But does it really matter? A lot of information on the web is all about giving you lab-style testing. I'm not going to do that. Instead I'm going to apply logic and experience for photographers based on practical knowledge in the field. What you'll realize is that this 12-Bit vs. 14-Bit RAW debate is so similar to using one brand of soft toothbrush to another brand of soft toothbrush.

What ISO Is Too High? A Real Noise Comparison From ISO 3200 to 12800
Not very long ago, increasing ISO beyond even 2500 on your DSLR felt like giving up something precious, like a part of your reputation, in return for getting a shot. Yup, I've felt this way many times when having to embrace horrible grain at the cost of capturing a moment felt like I would be slandered later on for having so much digital noise in it. Colors fell apart and the texture, or lack of it, seemed like something out of an amateur's oil painting on canvas. But modern cameras have changed that equation considerably - or have they? We take a look at some unedited high ISO shots taken in low but not mediocre light conditions at night, with a camera that can stake claim to being a low light king for high ISO quality.

For sure, it brought everyone I took photos of quite a bit of visible joy. But in today's world, it's impossible for photographers to spell the word camera without ME. Does Shooting in Auto ISO Actually Hurt Your Exposure Control?
Modern cameras are so good that auto ISO control is something that isn't even worth fussing over as long as you set the right parameters. This is especially the case with cameras that don't have the highest megapixel counts and have been around since the year 2020. If anything today, specifically choosing your ISO is an intentional act that makes you shoot in a very specific way. One leans more towards a care-free setting in the same way that street photographers shoot images in aperture priority. The manual mode, on the other hand, is all about actual intentionality.

Could Sharper Lenses Really Make Images Look Like AI?
The lead image of this article is one that will always stick out to me. It's an image of my good friend, Alex. And I remember when I was showing it off to a bartender identifying as Gen Z, she told me it looked like AI. However, I was showing her the literal back of the camera screen -- and this is from the Leica SL3. It didn't make any sense to me especially because the image was still straight out of the camera and not even loaded onto my phone or a computer yet. And because I don't use Adobe Lightroom or Adobe products aside from Behance, it took me a while to understand why the image looked like AI. Only after I studied up on the issue for. few years and even noticed how my friends using Lightroom were editing did I understand what was happening.

You definitely don't see a 1000mm 40-inch f/8 Cyclotar lens spring up from the depths of ebay everyday! What exactly is this curious-looking item? Well, there's not much info out there other than what ebay seller brcamera has provided. This rare Cyclotar lens was made by Alan Gordon Enterprises for the US government in the 1950s. It was used at the Nevada Test Site for documenting testing activities (we're definitely itching to know what kind) from the 1950s to the 1970s. It was especially constructed around a 40-inch Bausch + Lomb f/8 Telestigmat lens and was equipped on a Crown Graphic 4x5. What exactly is this curious-looking item? How Andrea Girones Uses Nikon For Astrophotography
Humans have always been fascinated by space. From stargazing to enjoying an eclipse, people have found varied ways to understand and photograph the celestial events around them. With astrophotography, many are able to document nebulae, the Andromeda Galaxy, or even the Milky Way. While astrophotography is a breathtaking genre, it does require certain setups to capture such phenomena. Andrea Girones has been documenting stars, galaxies, and space for several years now. Having photographed both astronomical objects and landscapes, Girones shares her unique setup for each sub-genre, and how young photographers can begin their journey.

Jo Ann Chaus Delivers Photographs That Force You to Slow Down
When I look at the photos of Jo Ann Chaus, I'm sort of transported to a fantasy land of sorts involving a time now long lost. Her obsession with color and what appears to be a love of something almost around the Mad Men era speaks to a romantic side of us that's rooted more in originality and a special type of documentary. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I read her bio and found this line, "She is best known for her psychological self-portrait investigations surrounding generational inheritances." And her new book, Unspoken, Jo Ann looks at the idea of feminity in a fascinating way that's far less performative than what one may see from content creators online.

Why Manual Focus? The Guide for Photographers Only Shooting Digital
Autofocus does a great job; but it's a tool that should really only be used sparingly. As a high-functioning blind man, I can attest to the idea that manually focusing a lens will make you compose a scene differently as well as make you rethink how you're making the photograph. This isn't only from zone focusing, but also from the standpoint of the aperture, depth of field, and all. With autofocus, your lens engages and you just simply snap the shutter. But with manual focus, you look at a scene, realize how little is in focus, and then make adjustments. To that end, you become so much more intentional when using manual focus lenses.

Nikon Z5 II C Review: They Made Another Street Photography Camera
The Nikon Z5 II C is a fantastic camera in so many different ways mostly because of the form factor. The influencers will tell you that it's not a real camera because there is no viewfinder, but truthfully, you don't really need one if you know how to zone focus for street photography. When I was summoned by Nikon for a meeting about the Nikon Z5 II C, all the reviewers on our staff were so curious. "It's a street photography camera," we were told. Immediately, we all thought that it would be a point and shoot of some sort. Were we finally getting the Nikon Coolpix A that we've wanted? The Nikon Z5 II C isn't that; nor is it the Nikon Z30 that was predicted either. Instead, this camera embraces an idea that I've been thinking about for a while.

How Long Will Your Canon Camera Really Last?
Canon cameras are rarely destroyed due to a single failure. It's usually with slower challenges, such as using the shutter a thousand times, a weather seal that is way past its limit, or a battery that does not last a whole day. The company has been very clear about how long a camera can last, and it goes beyond about "it depends" answers. If you are Canon owners, here is a quick look at what to expect from the cameras.

Our Favorite Image Profiles for People of Color
For over a decade now, here on the Phoblographer both I and several other writers for the site have been talking about making images for people of color. It's been proven for a long time that photography wasn't totally developed for those of us with darker skin tones. But as the only Editor in Chief of a large online photography magazine who has visible melanin in their skin, this is an issue that has always been very close to me and my heart. A while back, we wrote an article about people of color and Fujifilm Film simulations; and I decided to write about other systems. So here's what I've found over the years in my experimentations.

The Street Photographer Providing the Gear Doesn’t Matter
Often street photographers talk about their gear; though they surely do also discuss their work. In the case of photographer Nei Valente though, you can really see the artistry in what he captures on the streets. In a piece from our archives, he spoke with us a bit about what it's like observing the people here in NYC. "...to accurately represent a place, you can’t photograph only the ordinary people and scenes, but also capture what contrasts with the normality and thus makes that place special enough to be photographed," he says.

Viltrox Adds 4 New Lenses to L-mount
At IBC 2026, Viltrox teased that new lenses are coming to the L-mount. And today, they're making it official. From the Viltrox AIR series the AF 14mm f4 L, AF 20mm f2.8 L, AF 40mm f2.5 L, and AF 50mm f2 L are now being announced for the L-Mount. Though we've tested only a handful of lenses for the L-mount from Viltrox, we expect that this is where the autofocus performance may indeed be the best because of how the rules of the L-mount alliance works. It's something that Nikon, Sony, and Canon could learn from and greatly benefit at. In many ways, the L-Mount is the opposite of Micro Four Thirds.

The First Presidential Dog to Get a Photograph
Meet Fido: Abraham Lincoln's beloved dog and the first Presidential dog to be photographed and still have surviving records. Mr. Lincoln loved his dog and before he became President, he was said to bring the dog with him into town often. The dog would sometimes fetch parcels and even wait outside the barbershop when he got a haircut.
