Drones are critical tools for real-time #wildfire #pyroaerobiology smoke measurements, as well as whale snot research! Coincidence? www.science.org/content/arti...

1st #fireecology & 1st #postdoc paper shows that wildland fire 🔥 pushes bacteria from within plants & soils into the atmosphere. This is an important piece of understanding how smoke moves microbes (good & bad). 🧪🌎🔥🧬 doi.org/10.1029/2024... #microbiome #wildfire

These results support a growing understanding of wildfire 🔥 as a microbial pump & smoke as an environmental reservoir & mechanism for dispersal. Kobziar Fire Ecology Lab @uidaho.bsky.social #pyroaerobiology #wildfire #dispersal #biogeography #bioaerosols doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Evidence for Wildland Fire Smoke Transport of Microbes From Terrestrial Sources to the Atmosphere and Back

Our recent paper traces the bacteria 🦠 in wildland fire 🔥 smoke back to ground sources for the 1st time. We found that 70% of smoke-borne bacteria originated from the aspen (33%) & soil (37%) communities at the burn location. 🌎🔥🧪💻🧬 doi.org/10.1029/2024... #FireEcology #smoke #microbiology #NSF
In the foreground is a drone (a.k.a. UAS) outfitted with special aerosol sampling equipment on its orange landing mat. In the background is a large smoke plume from a high-intensity prescribed burn in Utah. The photo was taken in October so the grasses and aspens are a beautiful golden color.
