In their defense, it is possible that the final design was influenced by their input. Brockman lost a lane in the 3000 block to preserve tree roots and there is some serious rerouting around one particular tree, both accommodations presumably increased the project cost significantly.

After nine years of hopeful waiting, my kids finally got to walk on sidewalks all of the way to school today. Woohoo! #a2council

My guess is that most public parks amenities such as pools, golf courses and skating rinks are running at a loss. The public supports such projects so it’s not just the wealthy who can swim, golf and skate.

…practices and games because I’ve been told by Rec and Ed staff multiple times that no fields are available on dates I’m asking for (mostly Mondays). Vets #3 is now open for practices but no games. And that’s just one team. Ask Alan Oaks of the Ann Arbor A’s how their seasons have been going.

I’m not trying to be combative on this, but Rec and Ed is giving you wrong information. I had reservations for Vets #3 on 4/20, 5/11 and 5/18. All were canceled and no equivalent replacement field with fencing (Vets or Bicentennial) was offered. I’ve stopped asking for field dates and canceled…

Since you didn’t get a straight answer: field #4 remains a dog park. Field #4 was undamaged by the storm.

This makes no sense. The dogs are using the one field that humans can use for baseball/softball games. You’re choosing dogs over kids.

There was no damage to field #4. The damage to #1 was minor — just bent fences. The one field that can be used by humans is being used by dogs. It shouldn’t be this hard to do the right thing. And it’s hard to tell that staff are working quickly b/c nothing happens most days.

Last night was perfect for a softball or baseball game, yet none were happening at Veterans Park because perfectly playable field #4 is reserved for dogs. Meanwhile, three youth baseball teams had to split field #3. It is approved for practices but not games. Dogs get the best field. #a2council

The public investment (or tax $ giveaway) is quite large. Why can’t the project stand on its own without public money for parking decks? I don’t see why that isn’t a reasonable objection. Oxford/Hauptman have the resources to make the project work without public money for parking decks.

Tough day for youth baseball in #AnnArbor. Many, many games will have to be canceled. Meanwhile, the youth field at Veterans Memorial Park with the least damage (field #4) is being used as a dog park instead of a youth baseball field. @A2GOV @TravisRadina

There is an active sky writer over Ypsilanti, and he/she is decorating the sky with hearts and smiley faces. Delivering smiles. #reasonstolookathesky #annarbor

I get your point, but if we used “space per person moving” as a metric, then handicap accessible features would get a lot less area. Also, there are plenty of days, times and seasons when one could take this photo and nobody would be on the sidewalks. We should still have sidewalks.

I don’t think the glove and bat touch here. It’s just the angle that makes it appear that way.

And because they never have to walk in the street at peak traffic times, they don’t see the need for sidewalks. Baahhh!!’

Really hard for younger folks to afford a house on a nice street, and once you can, 1994’s Prop A means we newbies pay the most in property taxes. Retirees can also choose to avoid walking on our block at 8:00am and 3:15pm, the two times of day when we have peak vehicle and kids walking traffic.

This engagement issue is also about housing affordability. Our stretch of Brockman is mostly childless retirees. Only 3 families with kids, and only mine has school-age kids. Two of three of the families with kids have a doctor parent, and the third has a UM professor parent. Need $$ to live here.

It was nice to have the meeting at Mallett’s Creek Library. My six year old entertained himself for an hour in the kids’ area. Better than City Hall. But, yes, only one of my wife or I could attend due to kids’ activities. And the engagement process does favor retirees b/c they have more free time.

Are the UAW pension and healthcare trusts only in cash?

I could forward you the email from City staff to the Ypsi-Arbor Little League president requesting that teams not practice at Buhr Park without a permit. It’s still off limits this spring. Like you said, the fields aren’t even that nice. Let kids use them.

Yes, the City requests that any baseball/softball practice on a City field be accompanied with a permit issued by AA Rec and Ed. I refuse to pay the fee for tee ball practice at Buhr Park, Esch, Frisinger, etc. But the City wants any “organized events” to have permits. I do pay for Vets/Bicenten.

I was running a baseball practice at West Park in 2023. I paid the $38 field fee, but a dog owner still turned his dog loose in the outfield to play fetch during practice. I mentioned my reservation and the distraction to the kids. He responded, “There’s plenty of space. I’m not hurting anything.”

philtribble.bsky.social @philtribble.bsky.social · 08/04/2025
That was me. I wish I had placed more emphasis that you baseball/softball teams have to $38 to use a field for two hours. Do dog owners have to pay to use the dog parks? I hope not, but we should reevaluate the costs and hurdles for baseball/softball teams to use fields.

Would it even be illegal for him to accept a billion dollar bribe from a Russian oligarch? One of my favorite quotes from the 2016 primaries was when Michael Bloomberg was asked if it was really good for America to have two billionaires running for president. His response: “Who’s the other one?”

I know. The situations aren’t the same. It’s just frustrating that people who are getting traffic calming don’t want it, and those who want it can’t get it.

We’re trying to get our street narrowed for traffic calming (not to mention environmental benefits of less pavement), but no luck so far. We’ll accept those resources over here!
