Just saw someone zoom by on a Solar powered recumbent e-bike, clearly homemade. I barely got a photo before he was away. Just commuting to work in Chippenham I think? Legend.
Industrial estate with a small grainy cyclist turning the corner, laying back on a recumbent bike, and two flexible solar panels making a roof over the top.

What am I doing on Twitter? Reminding everyone there exactly what they are doing and getting the charity more views. I’ll crawl through fucking glass to keep us afloat.
I know this website is mostly about spreading fascist ideology but I thought I'd break that up in your feed with a video of one of the beavers who live at Warleigh Nature Reserve washing its tummy.

Natural England posted this map of beaver territory and sightings. Guess where Warleigh nature reserve is. Ok fine I’ll tell. It’s bang in the middle off the F on the left, which I assume stands for F**k load of Beavers.

Today I had a brilliant group of volunteers join me at Warleigh Nature Reserve, some returning some new. One was a landowner we planted with last winter, come to return the favour. We coppiced a whole lot of sycamore (way too much of it) in the ancient woodland, making dead hedges to keep deer out.
Two young women getting stuck in with an axe. A gentleman with a pair of loppers trimming branches off a small felled sycamore tree. General activity in the coppice area with lots of “binders” cut for use in hedgelayingA thinned out woodland with lots of useful wood products cut. More light coming in now, with a very dark woodland in the background for work next year.

You folks paid for the paddleboard that @protect.earth use to scout out land drains and look for beavers. You chipped in when our storage unit was raided and they stole a new old petrol auger. Can now confirm they also stole cordless screwdriver & impact driver set. Can you help?

Today I accidentally loaned out the van and left my wellies in the back, meaning I had to spend a few hours heaving through stingers and paddleboarding the Fishy McFishface camera into place in Birkenstocks. 🤣 Eventually picked up the beautiful boots @benwillbond.bsky.social donated me. Gorgeous.
Laying down on a paddleboard in river ducking under a tree, wearing human clothes instead of the probably better idea of a wetsuit. Two gorgeous brushed suede waterproof boots with a background of grassSide on of these lovely boots. Never had a pair so pretty.

Still fighting balsam in September here at Warleigh Nature Reserve. With 10+ football pitches of the stuff in tricky terrain and mixed in scrub, we’ve had our work cut out. Some areas have been cut or cleared 3-4 times this season. Some new seedlings, some cut reshooting, some pulled pile regrowth.
Some smaller Himalayan balsam only a few centimeters off the ground and mixed in with also short bramble, with trees in the background. Small coppiced shrub of balsam, with as yet unformed seeds unready to pop or spread.Flowering balsam with immature seeds Small balsam growing from bet over and not quite crushed well enough previous efforts

No sign of it at all on the front pages of the two papers which splashed the polls secretly funded by a Reform donor earlier this year

CCS/DAC boosters get so mad when you point out their favourite technowank has consistently underperformed industry predictions throughout its entire history. It’s not just “early days, it’ll get better, like solar panels”. Solar panels have always outperformed predictions.
Carbon capture capacity flat lining against all predictions barely getting off the X axis, whilst solar power has constantly risen Hocky stick style against much lower predictions

Also dude “we would have to be burying around 1.6 billion tons, or 1,600 megatons, of CO2 per year by 2025.” You keep talking about sites offering 1.4 megatons. Are there 1000 of them actively running and storing the projected amount? No. Obviously not or this graph would match projections.

After possibly the worst week in history (the canal boat is all better now mostly and I’m over being burgled) I am taking a day off to progress the raised bed at the nature reserve. Filled it with logs, brash, then cuttings, then four reusable bags of compost from Bath’s The Urban Garden. Need more!

Some common range arguments are: “EVs can’t haul 20 cows to market…” (some can yeah) and “EVs can’t tow 3 tonnes of oak tree I just cut down” (you should stop doing that) but a new nonsense enters the chat: “EV can’t get me from Toronto to Tuktoyaktuk in a single charge so it’s useless.” 🤣
Try your EV in the upper northern parts of Canada see how far you get especially with a grid that is nearly a 100 years away from the capacity to support them on a large enough scale for everyone to have one. I drive ride share there are 3 drivers with EVs while they are sitting charging I'm making money and often the EVs don't make it 6 hours of a 12 hour shift so they need to charge and lose 2 hours it takes 5 minutes to fill with gas

RE my “rewilding” thread. On one side, there’s grumpy old land managers pretending all habitat creation or ecosystem restoration means “agricultural abandonment”. I was talking to them. I forgot on the other side are misinformed natural fallacy pushers who think any management at all is ecocide.
People have some kind of compulsion to interfere with Nature. \")/
They are also ashamed of it so pretend it's
'necessary' and they are 'rewilding!
Just admit you like gardening and controlling things thh.
I seem to be in a minority of about 0.1% who just want NatureSo no wild then - managedThat's not rewilding. It's creating a garden.Rewilding is an ideological euphemism for gardening.

Good news! I flagged down a passing boat and got towed off of the tidal Avon. We might have crashed into a few trees and smashed a bunch of plant pots but I’m free of the tides at least. Engine still out of action and electronics still doing nothing but charging my phone with solar and a pub meal.

Some people think “rewilding” means land abandonment. If rewilding means not doing anything why am I constantly knackered. Grass is scythed, topped, and grazed. Drainage ditches blocked. Controlled burns in dry old conifer plantations until they can transition back to damp temperate rainforest.

Tides are getting later so I was out there with my wasp neighbours a while. Massive fish swam up to eat bugs right in front of me. Got the boat down neat and tidy, only had to get in the water and heave the bow off the rock ledge twice. Wet and sleepy with no power or shower so night night.

I’ll ride this tide and the morning one, then get out into position in the river to catch more solar. It’s been working a charm the last few days. Eventually RCR will come and give me good or bad news about the engine and we can drive off, or get towed to a crane out. Either way it’s not forever.

Issue 3: a friend was boat sitting for the day as I was at Warleigh Nature Reserve (we built a raised planter with coppiced hazel and wooden dowels) I didn’t mention we’ve got 40% battery, and he likes to cook big meals, and we’re stuck in the shade… so now there’s 15% battery. No alternator. 🫣
Bashing some wooden stakes into the ground with post knickers and sledge hammers Massive bit of wood being moved creatively by two very tired but strong volunteers Holes drilled between round timber and wooden dowels connecting them A healthy amount of growth coming back from our first copoiced area in Hazel wood

Weirdly the ankle deep water in the bathroom and bedroom wasn’t going anywhere after the engine bay was entirely pumped out so I had to chainsaw out a bigger hole to stick this second bilge pump down lower. Got it down to an inch of water. Today is going to be fucking horrendous.

Phil Sturgeon 🌳🚵⚓️ @philsturgeon.com · 14/08/2026
It’s definitely good when your neighboaters send up a bat signal and your friends recognise the boat and call you up to make sure you’re actively shitting your pants and working on it.

Phil Sturgeon 🌳🚵⚓️ @philsturgeon.com · 14/08/2026
What about when your boat sinks so low the exhaust hole is taking on water, and you have to shove a plastic bag up there and move all the weight on the boat to the other side. Is that good?

Here’s some of my “Solar farms are necessary and usually aren’t bad” credentials if you needed them. The point is “all of the above” not just only the thing that’s most profitable and sometimes is bad actually. YIMBYs like James seem confused about this but -not all land is identical-.

Putting solar panels on roofs is sensible not just for cost savings but the shade reduces cooling costs and energy further. Every warehouse/factory will have them soon, but even when they do _we'll still need utility-scale solar in fields_. Decarbonising society and industry requires a lot of juice.

IKEA didn't build renewable generation to power 1.47 million homes because politicians told them to. They did it because the economics stacked up.

Straight back into it from holiday, taking down this beast of a fally-down old beech across a path at Warleigh Nature Reserve. It was suffering some rot, but didn’t come down in a high wind. Looks like it just gave up on all this heatwave and drought.
A large multi-stem beech tree cracked at the base but still supported by multiple branches touching the groundA guy with a chainsaw and enough PPE to be safe but looking like he’s come back from holiday in linen shirt and shorts. All the wood on the ground ready to be used for timber, or woodchip to go on the trees we’re going to plant in an open field in the background. The path is one again open but a little overgrown for now. Next job strimmers. At least nobody will be flattened.
