It is so incredibly funny that there are good, efficient solutions to stuff that don't require burning down an entire forest but people are opting to do the forest-burning solution instead

When we were exploring transcription for ~100,000 Japanese magazine pages, someone recommended me a gigantic LLM prompt that would've cost thousands of dollars to run Instead I did it with a local script that had so little impact that PG&E said I was among most energy-efficient homes this month

Ideally, code comments should explain why you did something and also express how wonderful or terrible it is to use a computer (comments are from various contributors to Reelism 2)
"ohh FUCK we gotta figure out the angle of the wall we hit. fuckkkk""Prototyping while enjoying an alcohol on a 41c/105f degree day. Ignore or unfuck at your leisure.""This has to be here to prevent a compile failure on startup due to return mismatch. I hate it so much."Comment on a high score parsing handler: "guhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

If you leave short story-sized comments in your code, it should be to explain something so messed up that you need to leave a message to yourself, Memento-style See: the first half of a comment block I left in the weapon code of Reelism 2
A massive comment block in the Basketball weapon code for Reelism 2. It reads, in part:

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter the Splot_BasketballProjectile section!

During the Early Excess period for Reelism 2, the Basketball was extremely prone to crashing. This was probably the most frequent piece of feedback that we received. We tried many, many, many times to fix it, and for that reason, I must tell you the story of what happened.

The Basketball was originally split between two objects: a projectile actor, which handled the collisions with monsters and geometry, and a WeaponGiver actor with a larger radius, which is what the player picked up and made the ball easier to grab in the air. This configuration ran into an issue where, randomly, GZDoom would crash immediately after the ball was thrown or dunked. The problem stuck around for months, even persisting into the first public release of Reelism 2, much to our frustration.

As far as we can tell, the underlying problem was related to how the two Basketball actors would need to constantly reference each other. If one actor was removed from play in the middle of the other actor's script, there was a chance that GZDoom would crash by trying to reference the properties of an object that didn't exist anymore. We could never get the two actors in sync, no matter how many safeguards we added.

The obvious solution to this problem was to combine the two Basketball objects into one actor, which is what you'll see below. However, I was reluctant to do this at first, because we would lose the expanded WeaponGiver hitbox. The Basketball is a pretty small object, so I was hestitant to cut that feature.

I started to implement the trimmed-down version of the Basketball on the evening of December 2, 2020 when the solution dawned on me: We could still use a hitbox actor, as long as it did NOTHING."

We're continuing to fill out our collection of Videogame Advisor, a trade magazine that covered the game business in the mid-90s. Currently up to 16 issues! archive.gamehistory.org/folder/be63c...
An article about in-store marketing from the April 1996 issue of Videogame Advisor.

"In all of our actions lies a common goal of motion. I forget the author of that phrase, but he or she has unearthed in a few words the essence of motivation. It translates on a more basic level where we are concerned with videogames, into the term we frequently use, multilevel marketing. All either concept defines is a convergence upon the ultimate transaction, where the product or service is moved into the hands of the person for whom it was made. In short, there are two lines of force that link every individual in the videogame business with every other individual, the product and the consumer.

I realize that this is an oversimplification of the way we do business, and I'm sure there are days you don't quite feel an ethereal bond with your suppliers, but it all ties into the theme for this month's article: marketing on location. The link becomes important as we discover the resources available to us and complete the chain of impetus that compels the consumer to buy.

Okay. This is all well and good, but we need to distill this even further. One of the sources I turned to for help in this matter is a company who has had its hand in nearly every tier of the marketing business for over a decade and has specifically targeted electronic entertainment in the last six years, BDS Marketing. They are the force behind such successful marketing strategies as Phillips' CD-i and the original Panasonic 3DO machine, the FZ-1. You may not be familiar with the company itself, but you positively know the products they have successfully marketed: Hagen Daas Extras ice creams and frozen yogurts, Sharp office products, the Kodak Photo CD, the Videoguide on-TV Programming Guide, and the Miracle Piano Teaching System, to name but a few."VGA Stock Report from January 1996. The top stock of the month is Matsushita, closing at 157.50. The loser is Atari, closing at 1.25.

In the Washington DC area, there used to be an underground puppet store deep within a pedestrian tunnel in Virginia that had malevolent energy. I feel like the durian store is the Bay Area version of that

More than what Frank said, I think a big reason VGHF has been able to build trust is that we've approached our collections in a way that is human and thoughtful, instead of just acting like wolves tearing at meat. If all you care about is Stuff, then you'll end up treating people's lives like Stuff
