I'm really sorry to hear that. For languages with few speakers, anybody who can help keep it in use is incredibly valuable. It's really frustrating when people can't see that and do pointless gatekeeping. I hope you manage to find some people to speak with who appreciate you.

It all stayed with me for some reason & when I got back I started reading about Sámi culture & language. Recently I found there a new Northern Sámi in Northern Sámi in English (my Norwegian is nonexistent) so thought I'd give it a try.

I was in Tromsø a couple of years ago and we visited a Sámi reindeer camp & did some sledding. Our guide told us about what was involved in looking after the reindeer over the winter & taught us a few words in Sámi.

Bures! Just started learning a bit of Northern Sámi, so interested to see this pop up. Cymraeg (Welsh) also has this distinction for 'can': the verbs 'medru' vs 'gallu'.

Oh this brings back happy memories from the 90s. We had been trekking in the mountains for a fortnight without incident, only for the entire party to be laid low by a birthday cake in the hotel in Marrakech the night before flying back to the UK.
