Personally I think there's a lot to be said for a 200 word limit for petitions. And council motions. And speeches in the chamber. Off to the radio studio now to record Cambs Politics, no doubt saying a lot more than 200 words...

Mind you, I can't help thinking that we could do with some live balaclava recognition technology. Here are the results of similar deployments in Peterborough earlier this year - 56,534 faces scanned, 10 alerts, 4 "arrests/disposals"

A little Cambridge election nostalgia - it's 12 years since Labour's Sue Birtles resigned her city council seat in Queen Edith's, which she had dramatically gained from the Lib Dems in 2012. The Lib Dems went on to recapture the seat at the by-election. web.archive.org/web/20141002...

Quite a comeback for Cambridgeshire Conservatives in today's MRP from Electoral Calculus. They narrowly hold Huntingdon and NE Cambs, and retake Peterborough, NW Cambs and E Cambs. Labour hold Cambridge; the Lib Dems hold St Neots & Mid Cambs comfortably and S Cambs by a mile.

This means that just two gains from Labour at May's city council elections would put the Greens level with them on 15 seats. Last year the Greens made six gains from Labour, though the political winds have shifted somewhat since then.

There is a spending limit for individual candidates for the last five months or so of the parliament before the election is called (called the "long campaign"), but this doesn't apply if there's a snap election before this period, and it only affects individual candidates, not national spending.

While £72m is undoubtedly a lot of money, it still only amounts to about £2.50 per UK household. During an election campaign, a party standing in all GB seats has a spending limit of around £34m nationally, plus about another £12m for individual candidates www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
