There are no drug treatment programs here. If an addict needs help kicking, he won't find it at Neuse. So they shrink to skeletons as they trade sustenance for an illegal substance that offers a brief escape from incarceration without nourishment."

Congratulations to Phill, who just earned his Associate of Arts degree from Adam's State University! He earned this degree through correspondence: no internet, no lectures, no modern technology: nothing but written texts sent through the mail, all while imprisoned in a cage. A huge victory!

NEW: North Carolina’s harsh three strikes law was adopted right before Ramulus Mason was sentenced in the 1990s, so was sentenced to life in prison. Now the man he shot decades ago has become his loud advocate, demanding that the state free him. A fascinating and complex story:

I don't think the writing process is easy for anyone. It takes time, dedication, and a determination that most people don't have. I am driven by a mission to impact the prison system. So I deal with the frustration. It's not about money. Not about fame. Definitely not about awards. It's about making our world better, both inside and out.

You ever had a dream where you want to talk, but you can't? Like you know you can talk, should be able to talk, but you can't get the words out? That's what drafting is like for me. And I get obsessed with a project. Sometimes I'll write 10 drafts of a piece until it makes sense. Even then, I'm not satisfied. I often send pieces to editors in hopes that they can see holes I missed

I hate doing the rough draft. And the 2nd draft. Too much info to examine and weed through. It's all frustration. Every time I start a story, l forget what I'm doing, as if I haven't done it before.

I like writing by hand because I feel connected to the pen and paper somehow. Typing keeps me at a distance from the work. Writing by hand keeps me dialed in. It puts me in a zone. Even when I had access to a CPU I wrote by hand until I had to type it.
