The intersection of art and music has always fascinated me. That’s why I was immediately enthusiastic when steel sculptor Georg-Friedrich Wolf asked me to open an exhibition of his with a drum solo in his large-scale studio. It was inspiring to play with the echos and reverberations of the space.

The Contis lighthouse, built in 1862, is remarkable for its very stylish two black stripes that spiral down its facade. This chic “barber’s pole” design was added by local artist Louis Lucien Bellocq, aka Menoune, in 1937 to improve the tower’s visibility.

Das nächste große Ereignis wirft seine Schatten voraus: Seit heute steht die Edelstahl-Skulptur „Points of View“ (2018) von Tony Cragg auf der Mathildenhöhe. Das Kunstwerk bildet den Auftakt zu einer Freiluftausstellung der BS Kulturstiftung über den Künstler. Die Eröffnung findet am 26.4. statt.

Tag 69 in 2025 Morgen, am 11.3. um 19 Uhr werde ich im Schulzentrum Marienhoehe einen Vortrag über die 1911 gegründete Elizabeth Duncan Schule halten. Die Schule ist ein Zeugnis der Weltoffenheit und Internationalität, die noch heute Darmstadt auszeichnen.

Tag 62 in 2025 Im Museum Künstlerkolonie ist diese komplex dekorierte Bowle von Albin Müller zu sehen, die von der Keramikmanufaktur Merkelbach um 1911 hergestellt wurde. Bei dieser Keramik muss ich immer an den psychedelischen Künstler Alex Grey und seine Entwürfe für die Band „Tool“ denken.

Tag 60 in 2025 Gestern haben wir in der Galerie Netuschil den 75. Geburtstag des Künstlers Thomas Duttenhoefer gefeiert. Thomas Duttenhoefer bearbeitet ganz unterschiedliche Themen in verschiedenen Stilen (mal figürlich mal abstrakt) und schafft herausragende Porträts, u. a. von Fritz Bauer.

Tag 46 in 2025 Das Wasserreservoir (4.700 CBM) auf der Mathildenhöhe wurde 1880 in Betrieb genommen und versorgte über 100 Jahre, bis 1988, die Stadt mit Wasser aus 10 km Entfernung und 60 m Tiefe in der Nähe von Griesheim. 1908 wurde hierauf das Ausstellungsgebäude der Mathildenhöhe errichtet.

Day 40 of 2025 The NFL is going backwards. The NFL Is removing the words “End Racism” that were prominently displayed on the field in the last four(!) Super Bowls. This move is in line with the current U.S. government’s anti-diversity, anti-equity, and anti-inclusion actions. This is a disgrace.

Day 39 of 2025 I found this old postcard (early 20th century) of an expressionistic lithograph by Wilhelm Gerling depicting the “Pädagog” secondary school, where, among others, Georg Büchner, Justus von Liebig, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, and the “Dachstube” literary group went to school.

Day 38 of 2025 Fascinating leather wallpaper in the Darmstadt Castle Museum. The museum presents the royal history of Darmstadt, including a painting of Queen Victoria, the grandmother of the city’s last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and a porcelain of his parents.

Day 37 of 2025 All the world’s a stage …. Darmstadt owns one of the largest paper toy theater collections in Europe. Collector Walter Röhler bequeathed his large collection to the city that showcases this collection in a small museum (Darmstraße 2).

Day 33 of 2025 Decommissioned porphyry quarry in Dossenheim, active from 1760-2002. Since 2009, it is open to the public and offers trails, a cafe, historic buildings and structures (e.g. a large crusher plant), as well as artworks. The quarry is part of the Geonaturpark UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 30 of 2025 Today, I had the pleasure to view paintings by the artist Roma Engelmann (Rosemarie Engelmann-Pillhardt) at #KunstArchivDarmstadt. The artist is currently featured in our exhibition “4–3–2–1 Darmstadt” with a large music-themed textile batik artwork.
