Torii in calm waters. Photography by Yasuhiko Yoshihiro

Captured by photographer Yasuhiko Yoshihiro, this ethereal landscape photograph depicts a solitary wooden sacred gate (torii) standing immersed in the placid, glassy waters of Lake Kinrin (Kinrinko) in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture. A delicate sacred straw rope (shimenawa) with paper streamers (shide) hangs suspended beneath the gate's crossbeam (kasagi). The scene is bathed in a soft, silvery morning light as mist drifts gently across the lake surface, veiling the distant forested shoreline and rolling hills in a delicate white haze. The perfectly still water functions as a pristine mirror, casting a dark, symmetrical reflection of the torii into the depths below. Bare, delicate tree branches reach down from the upper right quadrant, framing the atmospheric void.

The photograph awakens a serene, transcendental sensory atmosphere: the crisp, cool morning air clinging to water-bound stone, the silent rise of geothermal steam over calm lake water, the absolute stillness of early dawn unbroken by wind or human footsteps, and the deep, restorative quietude of a sacred watery realm.
Located at the foot of Mount Yufu in Kyushu, Lake Kinrin is famous for its natural hot springs (onsen) and freshwater springs that feed simultaneously into the lake basin. The temperature differential between the warm geothermal springs and cool mountain air creates the lake's iconic morning mist (asagiri) throughout autumn and winter. The submerged gate belongs to Tenjin Shrine (Tenjin-sha), a small Shinto sanctuary situated along the lake's edge, dedicated to Tenjin (the deified spirit of scholar Sugawara no Michizane) and local water deities.

The construction of aquatic torii gates represents an ancient Shinto tradition of marking sacred thresholds (kekkai) across natural bodies of water, acknowledging the presence of kami (divine spirits) within lakes, mountains, and coastal bays.

Wisteria: Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by Hiro Ino on 500px

Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this photograph by Hiro Ino offers a lush botanical composition of cascading wisteria (fuji) blossoms in shifting shades of soft violet-purple (murasaki-fuji) and pale rose-pink (usubeni-fuji). In the upper section, sweeping tendrils of lavender wisteria drape like an ornate floral curtain from heavy, gnarled timber supports, contrasted by fresh spring green foliage. In the foreground, dense clusters of delicate pink wisteria spill over a raised wooden planter in layered, cloud-like mounds. Along the lower right border, a carpet of white and pink daisies dots the garden floor. Diffused, soft daylight envelops the blossoms, highlighting the silky, translucent texture of individual petals.

Wisteria tree at Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by KotHat on photohito

Cascading like an ethereal, violet-tinted waterfall from an unseen sky, a curtain of glowing wisteria (fuji) blossoms overhead in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle. At the base, a thick, ancient trunk twists with muscular grace, its weathered, spiral-grained wood anchoring a vast canopy-like arbor from which countless long, delicate racemes hang in dense, weeping clusters. Soft upward illumination transforms the mass of pale purple and magenta flowers into a luminous, suspended ocean of petals, casting a soft glow onto the petal-strewn earth below. The photograph evokes a dreamy, multi-sensory atmosphere: the sweet, honeyed perfume of evening blossoms heavy in the cool spring night, the faint, rustling whisper of racemes swaying in a gentle breeze, the soft hum of nocturnal garden air, and the quiet, awe-struck hush of standing beneath a ceiling of living light. Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent specimen exemplifies the centuries-old Japanese tradition of cultivating grand wisteria arbors (fuji-dana). Cherished since the Heian period as a symbol of nobility, longevity, and refined elegance, wisteria appears throughout classical waka poetry, aristocratic clan crests (kamon), and iconic theater performances such as the kabuki dance Fujimusume ("The Wisteria Maiden"). Preserving a tree of this monumental scale—with branches extending across hundreds of square meters supported by meticulously engineered timber trellises—represents a supreme testament to horticultural monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for living craft). Through generations of dedicated pruning, binding, and care, Japanese arborists have elevated landscape architecture into a living, intergenerational fine art.

Cover illustration for a magazine called “Metro Guide” being distributed thought metro stations in Tokyo from September 2017.

Riding away along a glistening, stone-paved lane (ishidatami), a solitary cyclist moves beneath an arching canopy of autumn maple leaves (momiji) blazing in brilliant shades of crimson, rust, and orange. To the left, traditional timber townhouses (machiya) border the path, their dark wooden facades outfitted with hanging shop curtains (noren) and subtle lanterns. Along the curb, wild pampas grass (susuki) bends gently in the crisp air, while fresh rainwater pooling on the wet flagstones reflects the bright sky and fiery foliage like sheets of stained glass. Created as the cover illustration for the free publication Metro Guide, distributed across Tokyo metro stations starting in September 2017, this piece reimagines the historical genre of meisho-e (pictures of famous views) through a contemporary watercolor lens. Designed to encourage urban commuters to pause and rediscover seasonal beauty within and beyond the capital, the artwork bridges graphic publishing with classical landscape sensibilities.

This hidden gem of Japan is called Kameiwa Cave and is located within Shimizu Keiryu Park in Chiba Prefecture.

Framed by a dramatic explosion of autumn foliage, this striking photograph by Dera captures Kameiwa Cave in Shimizu Keiryu Park, situated in Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture. The composition centers on a majestic rock arch through which a gentle cascade tumbles into a calm, reflective pool below. Dense canopies of Japanese maples (momiji) in fiery vermilion, amber, and gold frame the cavernous opening, creating a natural border that contrasts sharply with the shadowed, moss-draped rock faces. The glassy surface of the foreground water acts as a mirror, doubling the rich autumnal hues and amplifying the luminous quality of the light streaming through the archway.

Despite its ancient, primordial appearance, Kameiwa Cave is actually a remarkable artifact of Edo-period civil engineering rather than a purely natural formation. Cut into the soft cliff face around the mid-17th century, this tunnel represents a traditional land reclamation technique known as kawabori or chawari. Local farmers laboriously carved through the rock to bypass a wide, winding bend in the Sasa River, redirecting the water’s flow through the shortcut to drain the old riverbed and transform it into arable rice paddies (shinden). Over the centuries, nature has softened the stone cuts, cloaking the arch in moss and wild vegetation until human intervention merged seamlessly into the surrounding forest landscape.

In recent years, the site has gained international fame as a "Ghibli-esque" hidden sanctuary, particularly during the spring and autumn equinoxes when early morning sunlight hits the water at a precise angle to reflect a glowing, heart-shaped light beam inside the cavern. Even outside these specific lighting phenomena, scenes like this capture the essence of satoyama—the harmonious borderland where human agricultural heritage and wild nature coexist over generations.

Yuza, Yamagata, Japan. Photography by Morikei on 500px.

Photographer Morikei captures the primordial, sacred ambience of Yuza Town in Yamagata Prefecture, where icy subterranean springs fed by Mount Chokai surge through ancient, moss-draped cedar forests. Framed at the foot of one of Tohoku's most revered volcanic peaks, the composition transforms an alpine stream into a painterly study of light, water, and shadow.

Photographic & Landscape Elements

The Flowing Waters of Mount Chokai: Yuza is famous for its crystal-clear spring-fed rivers (such as the Ushiwata River and Dohira Falls), where mineral-rich snowmelt filters through decades of volcanic rock before emerging into shaded forest basins. The photographer uses a long shutter speed to render the rushing water as a silky, luminous current.

Emerald Moss & Volcanic Boulders: Dense blankets of velvet-green moss (koke) cling to the dark, water-worn rocks, creating vibrant, high-contrast islands against the deep purples and grays of the churning stream.

Atmospheric Backlighting: Sunbeams pierce the upper canopy of towering Japanese cedars (sugi), illuminating a soft morning mist rising off the ice-cold water. The silhouetted branches and atmospheric haze layer the background with extraordinary spatial depth.

Embodying the spirit of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and the sacred reverence for pure water (meisui) in Japanese nature worship, Morikei’s image distills the quiet, untamed majesty of Yamagata's rural landscape.

An ancient tiled gate at Saiho-ji Temple (commonly known as Kokedera or the Moss Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Kyoto, Japan.

The composition centers on an ancient, traditional tiled gate embedded along a secluded woodland path, surrounded by a brilliant canopy of changing foliage. The perspective looks down onto the structure from an elevated vantage point, emphasizing the harmony between classical Japanese architecture and the temple's legendary, meticulously nurtured natural environment.

The lower half of the frame focuses on the rustic gate, which features a steep gabled roof clad in weathered, dark grey ceramic tiles. A scattering of fallen orange and red maple leaves rests on the roof's ribbed surface, mirroring the vibrant colors of the forest floor below. Beneath the gate, a stone-paved threshold transitions into a winding flagstone path that traces a line toward the background, flanked by low embankments covered in a lush tapestry of deep green moss and a heavy carpet of fallen autumn leaves.

Rising above the gate is a dense, multi-layered forest canopy that fills the upper register of the composition with extraordinary color. The trees present a magnificent gradient of seasonal transformation: deep green pine needles and late-summer leaves on the left give way to fiery shades of orange, amber, and brilliant crimson Japanese maples (momiji) in the center and right. The late afternoon light filters softly through the leaves, illuminating the forest floor with a golden radiance and casting long, gentle shadows that heighten the deeply meditative, sacred atmosphere of this historic Zen temple garden.

Mt Fuji, Shizuoka , Japan

Mount Fuji rising majestically over Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The composition utilizes a striking high-angle aerial perspective, featuring a narrow asphalt road that slices vertically through a massive, undulating sea of pink-hued forest canopy. The image presents a fascinating interplay between human infrastructure and the sublime grandeur of the natural world, bathed in a soft, ethereal pastel color palette that heightens the scene's enchanting, otherworldly quality.

The lower two-thirds of the frame are dominated by a dense, sprawling forest rendered entirely in brilliant, candy-pink and magenta tones. The undulating textures of the treetops mimic the appearance of endless cherry blossoms (sakura), though the continuous, heavy saturation across the hillside suggests a digital infra-red or highly stylized color grade. Cutting directly up the center of this vibrant pink valley is a dark, smooth ribbon of road, its stark linear perspective serving as a powerful leading line that directs the viewer's eye straight toward the horizon.

Rising monumentally in the upper third of the composition is the iconic volcanic cone of Mount Fuji (Fujisan). The base of the mountain is wrapped in a thick, luminous layer of low-lying mist or fog that glows with the soft light of dawn or dusk, effectively separating the peak from the terrestrial forest below. The slopes of the volcano transition from a deep, velvety charcoal grey to sharp, white snow-filled ridges near the summit.

Perched directly over the peak is an extraordinary, multi-layered lenticular cloud (tsurushigumo). Shaped like a smooth, massive flying saucer, the cloud caps the mountain perfectly and catches the warm, setting sun, turning a beautiful shade of dusty rose and lavender.
