Plants and birds have a strong co-evolutionary mutualism in berry producing plant species, thrushes are a good example. During migratory flights, frugivorous birds can disperse seeds over tens to hundreds of kilometres. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

Owing to its slow growth, P. cembra is a weak competitor compared with other trees. However, it is better adapted to the harsh upper subalpine climate conditions than any other European tree species.

Northern winters are harsh this stored food is vital, some species such as Nutcracker are especially dependent on their stored seeds. Nutcrackers breed early (March) female pre breeding condition depends on stored nuts as does early nestling diet, later invertebrates and a few small vertebrates

Rooks also cache acorns, they fly further into open country than Jays do so disperse oaks to a greater distance. While many nuts are eaten some grow into trees, this bird assisted seed dispersal is important for plants with heavy large seeds such as these.

This is a superb Devon longhouse (Dartmoor region) an affluent and prosperous farm, other shared human and cattle houses were much less so, cattle helped keep humans warm, in the Little Ice Age this would have been even more valuable especially if firewood or peat limited.
