IISD Director @philgass.bsky.social explains, “Renewable energy projects are more aligned with Canada’s national interest than ones focused on fossil fuel expansion. Renewables can achieve both climate goals and long-term economic returns.”

Technical systems are not socially neutral. At the Global Coalition for Social Justice Annual Forum, IISD's @philgass.bsky.social explains when it comes to carbon pricing monitoring, reporting, & verification systems; who informs design, can comply, & benefits, all matter for equity & inclusion.
Quote from IISD Director, Energy Program, Philip Gass saying, "In the current global political environment; it is essential that those of us who support equity, inclusion, and justice voice this support firmly in response to the loud voices who are looking to roll-back hard fought progress."

📣 Yesterday, the Government of Manitoba released its first Climate Action Plan—a sign that Canadian governments do not need to abandon their climate goals to become destinations for investment. 🧵 1/5 @philgass.bsky.social
Quote from Philip Gass, Director, Energy Program at IISD saying, "With its new Climate Action Plan, Manitoba is skating where the puck is headed. Governments responding to U.S. Tariffs must be cost-conscious—positioning Manitoba as a net-zero investment destination will drive future prosperity and lower emissions."

In the wake of new tariffs, clean energy investment can diversify 🍁's trade + support economic security. “Electricity is foundational, so we need to start there...abundant low-carbon electricity is a magnet for foreign investment," @aaroncosbey.bsky.social, IISD www.theenergymix.com/trump-trade-...

The government should support people, not fossil fuels by: 1️⃣ Increasing the Canada Groceries & Essentials Benefit 2️⃣ Expanding incentives that reduce dependence on oil & gas—including support for renewable energy, efficiency, heat pumps, & electric cars. 5/5

This blanket tax break also provides the most benefit to wealthy households since they tend to use more energy. The policy has nothing to offer for Canadians who don’t drive or fly. Considering the price tag, Canadians are not getting their money’s worth. 4/5

The tax holiday will save a typical Canadian driver only CAD 17/month—hardly the support struggling households need. Meanwhile, the policy is now estimated to cost CAD 5.3 billion. 3/5

Volatile fossil fuel prices are putting pressure on the cost of living in Canada. The Strait of Hormuz crisis caused global fossil fuel prices to spike with the average Canadian gas price peaking at just under CAD 2/l in May 2026. 2/5

📣 Canada’s government is extending its gas tax holiday into 2027, but the policy is not delivering the affordability relief Canadians need. With Canadians facing high energy costs, government support is critical—but it should be targeted to the households that need it most. 🧵1/5
Quote from Nichole Dusyk, Lead, Canada Energy Transition at IISD reading: "Canada's gas tax holiday is the wrong answer for the right question. Trade uncertainty and high energy prices are driving up costs, but the billions subsidizing fossil fuels would be better spent supporting low-income households and helping Canadians get off fossil fuels."
