The Gorgonian Eater Hermodice carunculata (the fireworm), is devouring a branch of the yellow gorgonian Leptogorgia viminalis. With its powerful jaws, it can feed even on the tough skeleton of the gorgonian, leaving unmistakable traces of its passage @cnrs.bsky.social @sorbonne-universite.fr

“Once you have a garden, you have a future…” – Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden In La Gomera, underwater gorgonian gardens are mainly composed by Leptogorgia viminalis and ruberrima. These “gardens” play an essential role in marine ecosystems, providing shelter for diverse marine life.

Corallium rubrum is a Mediterranean flagship species in decline due to overfishing and climate change. We developed artificial caves to run controlled experiments on growth and reproduction in semi natural conditions. Results provide crucial insights for effective restoration strategies.

Orange gorgonian often takes a backseat to its beautiful relative, the red gorgonian. However, Leptogorgia holds significant intrigue due to its impressive resilience to rising temperatures. Our research aims at unravelling the mysteries behind this resistance.
