Ha, nah, it's just a combination of my sausage fingers + degrading vision in my left eye + ADHD = a lotta typos.

In short, spiritual uncleanliness is similar to a contaminant that can be passed on and there are many ways it can be transmitted which aren't obvious to people outside the culture. You'll see this theme a LOT in Japanese horror films.

... note to self: Run a horror game set in a clown college. I already have a sick title.

The guy beating his wife gives form to the wife-beatings becoming a spiritual cancer in the home, and a few years later the kids will look back and think "well, wait a minute, he wasn't the only guy beating his wife, why did we let things get this bad?" At least that's how I interpret it.

You can't fight against it! It's like trying to fight against, well, breathing.

There’s a fundamental unfairness to it, a sense that it’s basically an uncaring force of nature like radiation - you can just wander into the wrong place and that’s it.

I think a big part of the Japanese conception of horror (and curses) is the shinto belief system in regards to actions giving an animating life force to objects, people/animals, and even actions themselves. I don't think societal readings apply *at first*, but are an unintended secondary effect.

Love this about J-horror. You’ll never see a YouTuber try and outsmart a J-horror flic the way they think they can take on American movie monsters- Because in J-horror, you are just cosmically fucked.

I love the rage of Ju-on, the way that if you step in that house you're just fucked. Nothing you can do about it. I've always viewed it as giving the most powerless in society (women and children) the the power to get the vengeance they were denied in life.

Is the rot Japanese domestic violence, Japanese patriarchy?
160
Philby Bear (they/them) @philbybear.bsky.social · 4h
If the former… What is the rot, specifically? The Saeki family‘s deaths stemmed from the husband committing a murder-suicide after discovering his wife may or may not have an affair, and the haunting involves possessing and distorting people into repeating this awful incident.

Is the curse, this roiling ball of pure hate, meant to represent an endemic rot in the greater social fabric of Japanese suburban life? Or is there something I’m missing?
180
Philby Bear (they/them) @philbybear.bsky.social · 4h
The curse of this one suburban household… Hm. I don’t want to project anything too forward. I‘m not familiar with the dynamics of Japanese suburbia.

With Ju-on: The Grudge, the monsters weren’t ever human, so to speak. The opening scrawl informs the viewer these entities are, for all intents and purposes, bad vibes doing an impression of a family that had met a tragic end. Sadako is a generational curse Japan had wrought upon itself.
1120
Philby Bear (they/them) @philbybear.bsky.social · 4h
With Ringu, the ultimate takeaway is that Sadako was as much a victim as a monster; she is an indictment on Japanese society‘s tendency to turn a blind eye to the suffering of their most vulnerable, to their own atrocities, to pass the buck to someone else and abdicate all responsibility.

How it hits differently compared to Ringu, its staccato pacing vs Ringu’s clown burn, its cosmic hostility vs Ringu’s melancholy… … and what possible nuances I might be missing in translation.

Maybe Dorian critiquing cozy as a consumerist model might have been onto something! You can enjoy your schmaltz. I enjoy mine, in doses. But some of you have made it into cornerstones of your personalities, and you defend them like they’re sacred. Fuck’s sake.

I won’t forget one moot oblivious to the harassment Dorian had received, in spite of all material evidence, trying to play devi’s advocate. The devil has enough lawyers. Besides which, if they’re this mad, this obsessed?

Sidebar, this person has a history of whining about my boyfriend and obsessing over their Legebds & Lattes essay. I can’t help but find it telling… Non-cozy fandom people grokked what they were getting at, while these people need their egos assuaged.

In college when I was just starting to get into the genre I watched Ju-On: The Grudge and Carpenter’s Halloween pretty close together and they impressed so strongly on me how much is possible in horror just through precise geometry and timing. No monster is ever scarier than the medium itself can be
