Working on a Wolfenstein: The New Order video. It’s both about what think it is…and also really not.

I do *not* want to come across as defending Wizards on this one or any of the MTG stuff (I’m pretty disappointed in the Star Trek set in general), BUT in their post, they do say it’s not *just* Benedict’s depiction of Khan. Not a good look that they led with him though, either way.

Did you know you can just get the sickest books ever made from the library???
A top down map or Broadacre City, Frank Lloyd Wright’s utopian city with a key on the left hand side. A photo of the Broadacre City map side panel that explains Wright’s rules for his city:

A NEW FREEDOM FOR LIVING IN AMERICA

No private ownership of public needs.
No landlord and tenant.
No "housing". No subsistence homesteads.
No traffic problem. No back and forth haul.
No railroads. No street cars.
No grade crossings.
No poles. No wires in sight.
No ditches alongside the roads.
No headlights. No light fixtures.
No glaring cement roads or walks.
No tall buildings except as isolated in parks.
No slum. No scum.
No public ownership of private needs.

An acre of ground minimum for the individual
Broadacre City makes no change in existing system of land surveys
Has a single seat of government for each county
Administration by radio and flight
Architectural features determined by the character and topography of region
No major or minor axis

Tried to pick some of my favorite games with less than 500 reviews to share! I’d recommend every single one of these games to almost everyone, especially if you like emotional narratives, discovering rich worlds, or experiencing the depths only a game can explore.

We spend a good chunk of time talking about the Avowed video with some good behind the scenes production stuff. As a complete amateur at this stuff, I like to share my busted process to show how slap-dash all of this is sometimes to encourage folks to try making creative stuff themselves!

I don’t know man. This just ain’t it. I appreciate getting your bag off the bubble, it the idea selling corporate swag AND trying to selling it as a wholesome story of two great companies feels so bad. Love your stuff Ugmonk, but this sucks
An email message from Ugmonk announcing a new collaboration. The email reads:

“A Special Collaboration
We just launched a limited edition collaboration with Perplexity, one of the leading Al search engines. It gives you direct answers with sources instead of endless links to sort through.

When they first reached out, I was curious. Why would an Al company want to make leather journals and mousepads?

Turns out, we had more in common than I expected.
The Perplexity team understands something important: the best thinking often happens away from the screen.

Their tools help you explore and gather information digitally. Our tools help you process and create on paper. It's not Al versus analog, it's how they work together for better thinking.

I’ve put close to 200 hours into my upcoming Avowed video. It’s a massive project that I’ve learned so much while making. Here’s the smallest look at the video before it releases later this week. Art, history, Avowed, and the politics of surrealism, all in one quaint 90 minute video. Stay tuned.

My favorite thing about the long tail on Expedition 33 is going to be finding more and more of their art influences. It’s a spot the difference through art history

I’ve been threatening this Avowed video for almost three months now and I’m happy to say…I’m still working on it. I’m getting close to a solid first draft, but it’s alive and I cannot wait to get it out to you all. It’s gonna be such a wild ride. Here’s a sneak peek for the curious:
Which is why I’m here today. One of these posts was about what they called the “one-sided writing” in Avowed and it’s been burrowing into my brain for a month now.

Not because the poster was wrong, but because by asking the question, they tell on themselves a bit. Like a lot of people—both online and in reviews—I think they ended up fundamentally misunderstanding the game, mistaking it for open-world playground, not a piece of art with a point. Which, in all honestly, is an easy mistake to make. Games rarely present themselves as a piece of protest or timely critique. Often times they _are_, but, especially in these times, flaunting your counter-culture gets you death threats, not laurel wreaths.

So, let’s talk about the “one-sided writing” in Avowed, what that means, and the pursuit of “nuanced” narratives in video games.A statistics screen from a word processor showing a word count at 6,065 words and a read aloud time estimate of 50 minutes 32 seconds

It is WILD to me that Nintendo is *raising* the price on this experience. Notice the message in the lower right: “Some slowdown may be occurring.” You only write that line if you know it’s gonna happen. $230 now. For a rumble-less, ancient piece of tech that can’t paint a menu in sub-10 seconds

It’s so easy to feel that games and the outdoors don’t mix. That games are for hushed tones in dark rooms. And that’s sometimes true. But it was so nice to hike 3 miles to just record a video about a video game i have mixed feelings about New video coming soon.

I’ve got 5+ games that A24 should be scooping up instead of Elden Ring
You can feel all sorts of ways about the Elden Ring movie, but instead of digging into the deep lore or explaining why Boc: Tailor to the Elden Lord is the movie I expect Alex Garland to make, I’d like to pitch you on five games that A24 should tap their directors to make instead of Elden Ring.
