"We show that carbon-intensive (‘brown’) firms face lower [corporate] tax burdens than less carbon-intensive (‘green’) firms (..) representing a subsidy of at least nine times the statutory carbon tax rate" www.wider.unu.edu/sites/defaul...

Updated estimates from @gabrielzucman.bsky.social & co. (through 2023) suggest global profit shifting has continued to decline during the last decade of significant global tax reforms: gabriel-zucman.eu/files/GWZ202...

What climate fiction movie is this again? Denmark hit highest ever temperature (37C) and had golf ball-sized hails today.

It is worth saying again - again! - about the section 301 bluster that there are already a raft of s301 investigations completed, just lying around, waiting for action, on exactly European digital taxes *from Trump's first term*

The FT printed my letter today on digital taxes, wherein I write that distributive conflict may be a more useful lens than collective action problems for understanding the last decade of OECD-led cooperation failures.

This looks like an instant hit from Troels Krarup and Peter Karnøe who find that - across decades of technological, political, and economic changes - preeminent government-advising Danish economists consistently ignore dynamics of political economy and innovation to advocate (only) for carbon taxes.

Somehow the consensus in the FT world has become that we must deal with the revolutionary change to our societies and economies ushered in by AI by… raising capital gains taxes a little bit?

At the risk of repeating myself, while it'll undoubtedly please Danish business (and is an important coalition-enabling concession to the centrist Moderates), lowering the corporate income tax now runs against international trends.

Det er så absolut legitimt at ønske lavere selskabsskatter i Danmark. Rent faktuelt er presset fra den internationale konkurrence på lige præcis det område dog faldet, snarere end øget, de seneste år.

I wrote back in 2021 that the NextGenEU RRF would formally empower the Commision to coerce change from the EU's own tax havens - an absolutely unprecedented shift in taxing authority. It hasn't been all that visible but it remains very much true: www.taxnotes.com/tax-notes-to...

What does Trump 2.0 mean for tax multilateralism? In a new paper in the British Tax Review, I look at why (and how) international tax cooperation has proved surprisingly resilient in an age of multilateral breakdown. Open access: doi.org/10.31235/osf...

Livescore (for football) uses your third options, adds a colour indicator for the “winner” in each category (good), but also puts the lines within a defined band that suggests some global max which is not intuitive

One of the things we end up discussing most with students in my “Governing the green transition” class is the definitional politics around what, exactly, constitutes ‘clean’ energy. Another good case study here.
