I did the same, and I had two slightly-sore arms for a day.

Yes, it's criminal, but who is going to indict him? His Justice Department won't.

This is designed to allow companies to more easily cut wages and benefits for H-1B and other foreign workers, because they can't quit and go elsewhere.

I've noticed British accents softening as well. I recently read that the old "upper-class British twit" accent of fifty or sixty years ago is now completely gone.

PYREX and pyrex are two different types of glass. Upper case PYREX is probably borosilicate glass, while lower case is just tempered glass. I still have a set of PYREX measuring cups. www.allrecipes.com/article/what...

I'll admit it's gotten better, but recent experiences with two different distros tell me it isn't there yet.

(con't) and less reliance on command-line tools for common user functions. BTW, I have been a Linux user off and on since about 2003, but have worked enough with non-technical users to have a bit of understanding of these issues.

(con't) These include a standardized, GUI-based, method of application (package) deployment that the average Windows or Mac user can handle, a more standardized desktop and consistent menuing system, with installed applications linked to the menu (sometimes this happens, sometimes not), (con't)

In terms of broad acceptance of Desktop Linux, this discussion, although important, is, to me, little more than "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." No one is addressing the core issues that prevent broader desktop Linux acceptance. (con't)

Computers in classrooms and standardized testing pushed by "No Child Left Behind," IMO, share at least part of the blame.

I've seen recent reports that a high percentage of students at even elite colleges have difficulty reading a book cover-to-cover. I think it's time to change our K-12 educational priorities.

Even for those of us who are reasonably tech-savvy, but don't use Linux on a daily basis, this is still an issue.

Patrick H. Corrigan @phcorrigan.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
IMO, there are still two major impediments to widespread adoption of desktop Linux--inconsistent user interfaces, and the lack of a standardized, straight-forward, GUI-based application installer (package manager).

A late acquaintance, Mark Freund, reportedly developed a battlefield network for the US military using ARCnet protocols, because it allowed fast reconfiguration of the network as nodes, such as tanks, etc., dropped in and out of the network. It's not surprising to me that ARCnet is still in use.

Patrick H. Corrigan @phcorrigan.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
ARCnet's token-passing protocol was pretty efficient back in they, and 2.5 Mbps ARCnet could easily out-perform 10 Mbps Ethernet in real-world applications.

The first panel I was ever on had six participants. I was #6, and #5 took his time and mine. When the moderator handed him a "wrap up" note, he just set it aside and continued. Since I was already in the Q&A, I spoke real fast and apologized. Things don't always go as planned.

In the sixties, my far left friends would say that "The media is the tool of the power structure." Nothing I have seen, heard or read on my many years on this planet has made me believe that isn't true.

I've always found it interesting that those one the right complain about the "liberal media," when the ownership of the major media outlets has been mostly solidly conservative. Of course, reporters were once working class, but with the advent of journalism schools that is no longer the case.

Two major factors in enabling this: Reagan's elimination of the Fairness Doctrine, and Clinton's signing of the Communications Act of 1996, which allowed today's media consolidation.
