Moving back to digital from traditional. Some details I removed from the final design, like the roses, were for sake of ease. The absence of wings was very important to me - "HELL" is not a demon. She is a human. Also, the addition of the final's ♀ border and graveyard was a last min. addition.

If you believe that all actions a person makes are within/under God's light, you can't selectively choose that transitioning doesn't apply. "It's medical," so is taking medicine for your cold or providing life support, get real. This is why I depicted the angel in an antagonistic role.

If it wasn't obvious from the final design, I wanted to depict an aspect of my transition. Thus, I returned to the earlier idea, the "dragoon" sketch- but as a fight. A fight between heaven and hell. To speak more on that-

Then there was a point where I was probably feeling certain things and thought, "Wait, what if I made this about a trans relationship - a toxic trans relationship?" In fact, there was an earlier sketch that I didn't save that focused on men in hell reaching towards heaven to become women.

Although I said my inspirations conceptually stem from DISGAEA, my visual inspiration for HELL specifically was of what I perceive Dess / December Holiday to look like! Even though the final designs could use only two select ink colors, this is what I had in mind for her palette.

In fact, what I really wanted to pull from was DISGAEA. The way that it plays into/subverts the roles of those from Celestia and the Netherworld has always captured me. Thus, I thought it best to focus on TWO characters and break down their direction in terms of what is expected of Heaven and Hell.

When lining them all up, the ones where you're saying, "Oh, he referenced this pose and art," I would agree and say, "Yeah, he probably did, but it still reads as its own pose art." But the new one is more similar than not (clothes aside), and thus looks heavily referenced, if not intentional.
