y'all someone quoted me for a readercon panel proposal, i've officially peaked ?!?!?!!?!
Beyond Coming of Age: Cultural Narratives Around Aging and Surviving

In Old Enough to Become the Villain: Contemporary Narratives Around Growing Up, P.H. Low talks about the harms resulting from the sharp cultural divide between "child" and "grown-up," especially for marginalized kids: "You age straight out of shame into villainy, and the gates of the story clang shut behind you, and you know in your bones you’ll never be allowed back in." What stories allow their adult characters the kind of play and freedom traditionally reserved to children? What stories celebrate their adult characters for growing into middle age?

Thank you for doing this 💚 (& I especially appreciated the attached bit)
Strange Horizons co-ordinating editor and author of The Wall and The Horizon Gautam Bhatia spoke about what I’d call a related issue — which I slotted in “nuance” — specifically, orientalism: “Literary agents and editors based in the U.S. and the U.K. have certain assumptions of what Indian sf/fantasy should look like, and these assumptions flow from what they believe a U.S. and U.K.-driven market wants — which is essentially an orientalised and Bollywood-ised vision of India that flattens most of its complexity, and forces writers to write narrow, ‘identifiably Indian’ themes. For example, which is the last space opera authored by an Indian writer to get published in the West? The last hard sf novel in the tradition of Banks or Tchaikovsky? These don’t exist.”

[chapter marker—a silhouette of a fairy]
The Island tracked everything that washed ashore.
An invisible barrier surrounded it, a shimmering wall
a hundred kilometers in every direction. Canoes sank in
crossing; navigators lost sight of the stars. Later, trawlers and
airplanes split themselves against nothing, and the probes
they sent into the water returned out of sync or cracked
precisely down the middle.
Only the birds arrived unscathed. Only the foxes, floating
in on driftwood rafts.
So the Island embraced them with limestone arms and
swaying trees – as it did the corpses, the broken gunports.
Death is the way of things, after all, and who was it to
question the sea?

hello friends! these deathless shores is one year old today 🍰 wrote a bit about it in my newsletter~ lowph.beehiiv.com/p/one-year-o...
hello friends! i have once again forgotten to post more than once every three months oops. anyway, the one-year anniversary of these deathless shores’ publication is coming up and i thought i’d do a retrospective™ of what i learned about book things this year.

some things traditional publication gave me:

   1. bit o’ cash, aka savings for the first time in my life

    2. a lovely community of fellow debuts (& also peeps i met through pitch wars cont’d., s/o the final class!!)

    3. a gorgeous 464+-page object with which to bonk haters on the head finally, the primary takeaway: there are truly so many people involved in putting a book out into the world. so much work that agents put in, editing and negotiating and writing difficult emails and explaining to authors the weird quirks of the industry; editors, giving more notes and managing the 5284 moving pieces and advocating for the book with passionate enthusiasm in front of the entire publishing team (editorial, sales, publicity, etc.); copyeditors and production people and designers and artists working their witchcraft (orz i have very much been blessed by the cover gods); marketing / sales / publicity spreading the word; booksellers and librarians finding it among catalogs of thousands of new books as they curate collections for their communities; reviewers and social media folk analyzing and critiquing and talking it up.

however. hour by hour, day by day. no one but you is spending six years on that thing. (i mean, hopefully literal-you is not spending six years on that thing, either, but i digress.) no one is living inside the characters’ bodies and minds to the degree that you are, or gnashing your teeth at a new song because so perfectly fits a certain scene, or rushing out of the shower to whip open your laptop because you’ve thought of a plot twist. to me, writing is process. it is an act of existence in time, and a choice of how to spend it.

and so (i can’t remember who i’m quoting, only that i am): why not love it? why not allow yourself to be yourself on the page, in a world that increasingly demands conformity and biting your tongue? why not play, in this space devoid (if you so choose) of performance reviews or exams—where you’re allowed to fall short, to be wrong, to spin new worlds out of thin air?

currently crying about gardens & braids & echoes (The River Has Roots by @amalelmohtar.com) if you see this, quote with what you're reading this weekend!
You might think that something about the shape of those trunks, the sweep of their twisted crowns, reminds you of something, or someone, you've lost—something, or someone, you would break the world to have again. Something, you might think, happened here, long, long ago; something, you might think, is on the cusp of happening again.

TIL. my life is a lie
Chay (given name)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chay is a masculine name. It is either a diminutive of Charles,[1] ultimately derived from Germanic Karal, Karel, Karl, meaning “man”, or it may be Gaelic in origin, meaning “Fairy Tale” [citation needed]. This unusual name surfaced into the public in Britain in the mid-1970s, with the publicity for yachtsman Chay Blyth. It is generally pronounced Sh (as in Shane) ay (as in May) (/ʃeɪ/), and sometimes pronounced Ch (as in Charles) ay (as in May) (/tʃeɪ/).
