Goodness. It's really nice when smart people like your book. And astonishing when they teach you new things about it in their review. Thank you @mmvty.bsky.social

“For, don't you mark? we're made so that we love First when we see them painted, things we have passed Perhaps a hundred times nor cared to see; And so they are better, painted—better to us, Which is the same thing. Art was given for that; God uses us to help each other so, Lending our minds out.”

I also noted the lack of recall about our C19th Brit lit reading list. More homework going forward.

A well-meaning person recently asked me “Do you think AI will take your job?” An answer came this morning in an email from someone I taught 15 years ago.
Obviously, my own life has taken a bit
of a turn from the humanities, but I did want to express that your teaching was absolutely fundamental to me—from Victorian British Lit to the really important things like the respect, creativity, and, honestly, the amount of fun and being oneself that can be achieved within the classroom and academia writ large.

You'll find lots of good stuff in Gaskell, A New Introduction to Bibliography (1972). Makes the point that many conventions from hand press period stayed in place through late 1800s. Plus many details about varied stages of proofing and correction.
