Just Some Feeds @just-some-feeds.bsky.social · 14/06/2025

Hi, I am starting the process of closing the blueskyfeeds.com feed service in early July. I am having difficulty dealing with site outages, issues with the firehose, ballooning cloud operating costs, and blocking users trying to 'stress test' with feeds that store every post (you know who you are).

In effect Bluesky will be indirectly deciding who gets to be verified, for a large part of the ATProto app user base. Bluesky's selection of trusted verifiers may then be a locus of controversy with possible calls for Bluesky to have a formal policy (like Mozilla's) re who gets to be a verifier 3/

I have a random thought about all of this and Elon. In Walter Isaacson's book (as noted by @davekarpf.bsky.social), he tells the story of Elon constantly going all in. davekarpf.substack.com/p/elon-musk-...

[Max] Levchin was at a friend’s bachelor pad hanging out with Musk. Some people were playing a high-stakes game of Texas Hold ‘Em. Although Musk was not a card player, he pulled up to the table. “There were all these nerds and sharpsters who were good at memorizing cards and calculating odds,” Levchin says. “Elon just proceeded to go all in on every hand and lose. Then he would buy more chips and double down. Eventually, after losing many hands, he went all in and won. Then he said “Right, fine, I’m done.” It would be a theme in his life: avoid taking chips off the table; keep risking them.

That would turn out to be a good strategy. (page 86)

aint that the rub. "We want a chronological app with no ads just photos!". "OK, here you go" "It's a bit boring". I'm not sure what the middle ground is, but I like the ethos behind Foto and hoping they find their feet.

Bsky's DAU as measured on the firehose is currently 2.4M This measures only active users who like/post/follow someone. Paul's number includes people who log into the app/site but do not otherwise engage. So ~40% of active users do not like/post/follow bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/b...
