The first permanent Asian settlement in the whole of the Americas was by Filipino men escaping Spanish galleon trading ships in the 1700s. In Louisiana. These fuckers need to learn their own history.

A) Election day equipment is so fucking old there's literally no way it can be hacked by malicious actors unless they literally got a job in our offices & even then they'd only have access to change one parish B) Still, its beyond time for new equipment. We can't maintain the old equipment anymore.

Though as someone born and bred in BTR, I'd be on board with the panhandle/gulf coast being given to LA instead of how history played out. I've often wondered how Creole families (white & black both) from an identity perspective would've changed if we hadn't had separated ourselves w/ state borders.

Possible, but I don't think so. I'm no lawyer, I just have friends in LA who are. I'm not saying there are 0 differences but today's are way smaller than people usually realize. You aren't the 1st one I've told this to though & certainly won't be the last. www.tulanelawreview.org/pub/louisian...

I'm from Louisiana. In addition to all of the reasons TX is normally hated, its also where everyone who leaves Louisiana leaves for, they think they're special in having lived under so many flags, they stole Davy Crockett & lots of other historical/cultural TN things but most importantly.. its Texas

Sure but lots of people think Napoleonic code is where all of our laws stem from which isn't true. Criminal law/civil procedures/constitutional/administrative/corporate etc. is all still based on English common law. Its just property, contracts, family law, etc. that's still based on Napoleonic.

I've never questioned the fact that I'm a feminist - Mona Lisa smile was legitimately life changing for how I saw my version of it - but sometimes .... I see things like these gendered work ads from New Orleans and it stops me in my tracks. #nolasky

Addendum: I put this on Jim Crow because of the 1 drop rule white Louisianians were hell bent on putting a wall b/w themselves & their cousins of african descent so they abandoned Creole nearly completely, allowing the meaning to change outside of LA. Though a lot of us from LA stuck w/ the original

I don't know why I keep doing this .... Yes. White people can be Creole. No, Creole and Cajun are not racial designations. Yes, they're both ethnicities. Yes, they're both cultural. Yes, I'll probably fight with someone else before the day is over. Fuck the legacy of Jim Crow.

I came to the realization today that not everyone knows the US has had a president whose first language wasn't english but whose family had been in the US 200 years when he became President. Van Buren.

Did that help? Sure. But I also know it doesn't happen w/out the diplomatic crisis. It was political as shit w/ Harrison trying to get elected 3 weeks later & was trying to use it to get votes. Without the anniversary there still would've been a day we just may have gotten a better representative.

1892 was the year after the lynchings in 1891. It was also the year that Columbus Day was implemented as a response to the lynchings.
100
Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Its wholly unfair to say they embraced columbus when nobody was talking about him at all much less talking about the atrocities he committed in 1892.
100
Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
That's fair. Create a holiday for him then. Columbus day was never meant to be abt Columbus & people have forgotten what it was about. I had Sicilian family in NO at the time. The whole structure was supposed to be a fight against Xenophobia and its literally been allowed to become the opposite.
100
Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Fuck Columbus but also, for left leaning folks of Italian Am. descent, esp. those of us who know the story & had family in New Orleans in 1891 the entire country overlooking the day being a response to the US' xenophobic stance on Italian Americans in the late 19th century is frustrating as hell.

The Bank of italy started in 1904 by Giannini. The San Francisco fire in 1906 is what gave it the push it needed to become the bank it did. It was renamed in 1930. The first Columbus day was in 1892. Nice try though. Also, themobmuseum.org/blog/columbu...

Columbus Day and its ‘Mafia’ origins
Like America’s other urban centers, street gangs of thieves and ruffians were a common element in the New Orleans underworld. The influx of Italian immigrants added another ethnicity into the mix.

Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Its not abt Columbus. Give me Yogi Berra or Chef Boyardee or Frank Sinatra or Joe Pesci or Robert DeNiro day. I don't particularly care, just give the meaning back and stop talking about Columbus. And if that means the day finds its way into obscurity? Fine. Better than the politicization of it now.

Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
It was supposed to be an apology to Italy w/ a $25k payment. Instead, a grassroots effort was est. & the day made federal in '71. If your family was from NO & have the names Macheca, Marchesi, Bagnetto, Caruso, Comitis, Geraci, Romero, Scaffidi, Traina, Monasterio, or Polizzi you're likely connected

Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Columbus day was supposed to be a one time event but Italian Americans liked having a day to rally around. All of the statues were put up by Italian American societies to fight against the Xenophobia & the proliferation of mafia rumors being spread aimed @ Sicilian communities.
110
Marie Pitre @petitminou.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Columbus. He was never supposed to be given a day. Italian Americans were given a day because of the mass lynching of Sicilians in New Orleans. They were given a day because it was a major diplomatic crisis b/w the US and Italy. 3 of the 11 killed were Italians. All were of Italian descent.

100% Fair. I didn't read this correctly of for some reason thought voting was mentioned by Ron. I misjudged the conversation. I'm just as angry as you are about the dumb as shit census as it has absolutely nothing to do with voting and everything to do with financial distribution to states.

It absolutely does not. It leaves local administration to the states. There are in fact federal laws not in the constitution related to voting but you specifically called out the constitution. The constitution is not that robust. www.eac.gov/election-off...
