One of my least favorite evolutions in Games Discourse is the extrapolation of “every opinion is valid” to this argument of “well if the dumbest person alive can’t figure this thing out maybe it’s bad” which is how we end up with games sanded down to a sheen slick featureless surface

But at the same time the same players say they don’t want a BR and think that changing cryo spawn door bypasses to level 3 is bad because everyone will fight in control but they just want to rush spawns down and murder so like there is zero good solution in anything without all new maps

Marathon has a second impossible problem to solve in that they don’t want the game to just be a BR and want to lean into survival/teams accomplishing their own objectives, but the combat is so good that all the existing players just want to murder everyone at all times and force combat

Marathon is probably my GOTY, Sprawl Zero is my FPS of the year. both things are true for different specific reasons

SPRAWL Zero complete; despite a few qualms, best FPS of the year. - last boss wasn’t very fun - so much story being in secret pickups that I stopped hunting for due to time constraints was a bummer, codex should’ve been closer to the critical path. Will return to platinum someday.

the argument is constantly "i should be allowed to play how i want to play/who cares its single player and i want to have fun" well okay man i'm also looking at you struggling to understand things and being unable to read anything longer than 4 words so like maybe there is a correlation

Am I allowed to say that games streamlining so much in the name of “accessibility” (and I don’t mean features for physically disabled folks) and shaving down so much has greatly reduced critical thinking abilities in many people in the same way schools computerizing everything has in education

Everyone e nowadays skips all the tutorials, tooltips and menu text on games because “I know all this I know how games work I’m not dumb” and then play for 36 hours without knowing how any mechanics work, go “this game is bad it’s too hard” and then “how was I supposed to know any of that”

Like I don’t want to sound like I’m putting the military up on a pedestal but it does just blow my mind that these people entered power, looked at all these things that were built to keep them in power and said “nah”

Maps need more going on that is also engaging enough to possibly keep teams apart and focusing on different goals, rather than funneling everyone towards one objective that is actually secondary to just having a spot to all kill each other.

The thing I struggle most with extraction is that by the nature of the maps and the games, it just becomes an ultra high stakes battle royale for everyone involved; players have the best loot, and are the most fun to fight. With how costly supplies are, you HAVE to go after players as well.

Control Resonant is the type of game where if I was in a GOTY discussion, I would place a gun in the middle of the table and say “if you want to take this off the list you’re going to have to shoot me”
