Good thread. Valuable perspective and evidence.

Very good. But it doesn't make sense. She's happily eating salad and sausage while he's dishing up blancmange and jelly or something. To whom and why? Please explain.

As you say, the terms are not in competition, with 63% of Yorkshire’s ‘snicket’ users also regularly using ‘ginnel’. But there's a subtlety. Any snicket can be a ginnel. But in a row of terraces, the route to the backs of houses, it's always a ginnel. Never a snicket. In my bit of W Yorks anyway.

Very pleased to share this special issue of Critical Quarterly on "The Art of Failure -- Disruption, Loss, Decline", edited by Benjamin Kohlmann and Joseph Rosenberg. 4 of 6 essays are open access! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/14678705...

Fantastic research from my colleague @dlhnh.bsky.social here, blowing a secret plan wide open and naming the key nazis behind it.

This looks good. And if you miss the bargain, full price is still cheap.

Very interesting. I read recently that the Haymarket in Leicester had to be outside the city perimeter—because haycarts couldn't get through the East Gate.

Er, what does it do? I think ordinary people will need to know a bit more precisely than "its usefulness for routine tasks is growing by the day". Seems v. speculative to call it an iPod moment. What sales are you reporting?

I think a note clarifying that would be helpful.

That a response from the local vicar is hugely relevant because the parish council is calling for stuff. As a couple of people have said, this confuses two separate bodies. Parish council is civil. Parochial church council is something to do with the Church of England and vicars.

It's very odd. I hope he'll notice and acknowledge you soon. (None of my business and could seem trivial. But I think not spreading misinformation on socials is kinda important.)

But you didn't get any likes for it. Whereas Mr English got four likes for misstating stuff. Is this how things work?

Probably wise. But now I've searched & come across the fine-sounding Magnús berfœttr. Wikipedia says there's a "Magnus Barelegs festival" held near Downpatrick. So much to learn, so little time.

"The party’s annual conference was not overshadowed by the latest money scandal: it was illuminated by it." That's a much more helpful and accurate summary than the lazy overshadowy stuff from Chris Mason.

Jargon & technical language has a bad press, but it exists in all professions because it's needed. Communicating with the public is part of what that statement needed to do. It also needed to do other things, importantly avoid prejudicing any legal action. Loose paraphrases are not an option.

PJ White @petewhite.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I'm glad police statements use precise language, even if some of the technical terms can be misread. It might help if they were issued with "notes to editors/lay people". Lacking that, the onus is on readers to think a bit and get help if something seems particularly perplexing or absurd.

As confirmed by James Johnson who ran the polling and says he was called by Dan [Jukes], "who's always been my main contact in Reform, Dan". Not sure they've got proper deniability on this.

The BBC's Chris Mason says Farage failed to turn up to his own political wedding. What scrambled weirdness is this? Who is the other party? What do they feel about being jilted? What will be the consequences of this last minute breach of contract. So many questions.

Thank you for writing this. It's been annoying to see the bandwagon decrying of "DEI" in the UK. It's clear that those doing it know less than nothing about well-enshrined mechanisms for promoting equality in the UK. Including the actual name. (And of course, it's not just universities.)

I picked up this early in my freelancing life. Seems so obvious. Hardly needs pointing out, you'd think. Later on I found freelance forums full of people who hadn't got the memo. Endless moaning, indignation, complaints about editors, arguing. Weird.

Very interesting, thank you for making it freely available. As you say, poetry isn't theology. Also, I'm never sure how eccentric for the time Milton's theology was. Or how to read the blurring, say between Jove & God in Comus. Maybe that's just standard convention. But it is a bit odd.

V. helpful, thank you. There's a phrasing you might want to fix, about Badenoch "warned that it cannot be funded through tax cuts."

Most likely. As do adults generally. Doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're going to offer something to those weirdos who do want to read poetry, give them something good. Giving them pretend stuff risks turning them off, surely. Sorry IANIP.
