Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 2hExpanding a bit more (after 10+ missions) on Ace Combat 8: Still more “what” than “why” in the story, so the heavy lifting is up to character development— and I’m finding it hard to buy any of it. It’s neat to see/reference landmarks from past games get mentions here (which I won’t spoil). 100
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 9hFor a time... I thought Game Crazy could be the next FuncoLand. Similar concepts (demo stations, variety of platforms), plus tournaments? It was fantastic. For awhile. Game Crazy kind of morphed into GameStop Lite. Memberships. Magazine subs. Preorders. Corporate sales feel. It wasn't pretty. 130
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 10hBecoming an adult as a video game fan is great in that you can afford to buy more games instead of waiting for gifts, but time spent at work is needed to afford them… and then, as you age further, lower energy becomes a factor. Sure, I want to play after work, but I am BEAT. 010

Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 10hThis here is an example of what I affectionately classify as a "FuncoLand game"-- one of the games that came out during my FuncoLand employment period (August 1998 - March 2000). I bought a ton of games over that span and demoed a ton more. This one's in my current library. It's fine. 020

Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 14hI've had the privilege of playing video games on many video game consoles across six different decades, from the 1970s to the 2020s... but one that has always eluded me is the SEGA Master System. Maybe one day. 230
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 14hAh... to be 20 years old again. Funny thing, though. I... didn't play this in 1992. It took a good 20+ years for me to play it. And boy, did I miss out. I'm happy to own this game physically now. 120
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 14hOkay... initial thoughts on Ace Combat 8: It's... weird, thematically. More about the characters than the geopolitics and why there's conflict (at least through the first few missions). Some will like this, I think. I... don't. I'm not going to cite examples, so as not to spoil things. 120

Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 29/09/2026Did the Nintendo 64 really launch on a Sunday here in the US? That's when September 29th, 1996 fell. I read James Rolfe cite the 26th instead, which would've been a Thursday. Seems like it makes more sense-- but I'll be damned if I can remember myself. Accursed old age. 132

Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 27/09/2026Unfortunately, there will never be agreed-upon criteria for what is and isn’t “retro”— and, worse yet, the term has pretty much been hijacked by influencers to plant flags of expertise on. It’s kinda like… “gamer”, a term that used to work once upon a time, but became synonymous with bad actors. 152
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 27/09/2026It’s not quite a “Fortress” of solitude, but this is definitely a place I retreat to when life kicks the crap out of me… whether it’s work-related stress or the constant battles with Father Time that I am predestined to lose. Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 26/09/2026Fandoms have been incredibly shitty for 15+ years. Message boards were full of subhumans, too, but they had moderators to ban them out of existence. Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 26/09/2026Okay. Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 24/09/2026This version of the game controls like ass, and controller limitations have something to do w/that. If this was even, say, SNES, with its D-Pad & diamond face button layout... this could've worked (see Super Smash TV). A D-pad & two buttons? Nah, unless you allow two controllers/D-pads per player. 010
Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 24/09/2026Court rulings don't matter to the King and his ilk. Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 24/09/2026For me, it comes down to relative simplicity. Generally two buttons and a D-pad, and the games work around that setup. Pete Skerritt @peteskerritt.com · 23/09/2026$9 for Shatterhand on Switch/Switch 2 right now— versus $100+ for a loose NES cart or a $250+ complete copy. Yeah, yeah. Pirates will pirate, but I see $9 as a fair price for a really good game. 021
