wild that Waymo can pay a 127.5% tariff on a Chinese EV and still save money compared to the Jaguar I-Pace
The company’s Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis can reportedly cost upwards of $200,000 to retrofit with its technology. Despite being heavily tariffed, Ojai’s are actually cheaper.

Ojai robotaxis cost an estimated $38,000, according to U.S. import declarations cited by news outlets. After 127.5% tariffs are applied, the price skyrockets to roughly $86,500. Then hardware and software is equipped, which Forbes estimates costs $25,000 per unit to install.

yup, they’ve adopted the Uber/Lyft playbook of “park wherever you want; vulnerable road users be damned” I wonder whether they count cyclists injured by their bike lane obstructions in their safety stats pic from Aug 24

didn’t have “Trump invokes never-used Smoot-Hawley authority” on my 2026 Bingo card but here we are tax.thomsonreuters.com/blog/after-i...
Section 338: The untested wild card
Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 — a relic of the original Smoot-Hawley legislation — holds a unique status in this landscape: it has existed for nearly a century and has never been invoked. It gives the president authority to impose tariffs of up to 50% on countries that discriminate against U.S. commerce, subject to a 30-day notice requirement.

Whether it will remain unused is genuinely uncertain. The current administration has demonstrated a consistent willingness to test the boundaries of available tariff authorities. If Section 338 were invoked, immediate legal challenge would be virtually certain given its untested status. But “has never been used” is not the same as “will never be used.” Compliance programs that monitor the full range of potential authorities are better positioned to respond if this one comes off the shelf.

another victim of Trump v. United States. the president, acting via DOJ or Treasury, has exclusive authority to enforce federal tax law. absolutely immune! I hope Roberts is happy about reading the constitution to ban common-sense good government like not politically weaponizing tax collection
Trump v United States: "We thus
conclude that the President is absolutely immune from
criminal prosecution for conduct within his exclusive
sphere of constitutional authority"

beautiful…Apple’s forever buggy software helped cause signal-gate
According to three people briefed on the internal investigation, Goldberg had emailed the campaign about a story that criticized Trump for his attitude towards wounded service members. To push back against the story, the campaign enlisted the help of Waltz, their national security surrogate.

Goldberg’s email was forwarded to then Trump spokesperson Brian Hughes, who then copied and pasted the content of the email – including the signature block with Goldberg’s phone number – into a text message that he sent to Waltz, so that he could be briefed on the forthcoming story.

Waltz did not ultimately call Goldberg, the people said, but in an extraordinary twist, inadvertently ended up saving Goldberg’s number in his iPhone – under the contact card for Hughes, now the spokesperson for the national security council.

to contextualize yesterday's news— a) go-arounds are very common, especially at DCA. 1 in 300 flights during FY22–3 aborted landing! b) runway incursions are also somewhat common. there's on average one per day across the top 30 U.S. airports www.faa.gov/air_traffic/...

when a Scalia clerk, FedSoc member, and *Trump’s own appointee to the interim U.S. Attorney role* quits, you know it’s bad the Trump Administration is corruptly buying the mayor of America’s largest city and making no effort to hide it it’s WELL past time for impeachment

DETERMINED to cite Pope Francis's 2015 encyclical Laudato Si in my parking paper
153. The quality of life in cities has much to do with systems of transport, which are often a source of much suffering for those who use them. Many cars, used by one or more people, circulate in cities, causing traffic congestion, raising the level of pollution, and consuming enormous quantities of non-renewable energy. This makes it necessary to build more roads and parking areas which spoil the urban landscape. Many specialists agree on the need to give priority to public transportation. Yet some measures needed will not prove easily acceptable to society unless substantial improvements are made in the systems themselves, which in many cities force people to put up with undignified conditions due to crowding, inconvenience, infrequent service and lack of safety.

the constitution is showing its inability to handle 21st century political threats the constitution does not mention political parties anywhere. some founders quixotically opposed political "factions" yet the GOP and the modern party system has destroyed any limit on executive power
The only institution capable of responding to this with any alacrity is Congress. ***But Congress is also led by Republicans, and both the Senate majority leader, John Thune, and the speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, have declined to take any steps to arrest the president’s illegal arrogation of power or Musk’s destructive effort to run the federal government.*** Thune and Johnson, acting with the support of Republicans in both chambers, have, in effect, renounced their power over the purse and abnegated their powers of oversight. Their Congress is supine, submissive and subordinate, less the equal of the president than a tool of the executive branch — a subject of his will.
