And here's the same for proportion of all A-levels. (Note that I haven't yet incorporated the 2026 uptick in either.)

Just for fun, here's the long time-series in absolute numbers (not proportions). Some of the inflection points are probably artefacts of the data but the last 10 years tell their own tale.

At community-college level, the reverse is true - since 2010 prof/voc subjects down, humanities up (see Humanities Indicators). (1/2)

To surmount the data anomaly which Natalie rightly identifies, here is the SHARE of History degrees over the same period. (1/2 - technical notes to follow!)

It may be 'managed' decline or it may be declining demand, but there is a real decline in Humanities majors in US universities over the last 15 years. (1/2 - UK next)

More eye-opening work from Raj Chetty: mild preferences for poorer children at elite US universities but very strong preferences for very rich children. (Only part of the over-representation of the rich: admissions bias, but also differential performance and differential rates of application.)

And the same percentage share decline over the same period in the US (from Bachelor’s Degrees in the Humanities | American Academy of Arts and Sciences (amacad.org) though this doesn't appear to have been updated since 2018).

And here's History as a proportion of all degrees (with some missing data points, but still secular decline over similar period).

Here are the numbers as a percentage (of degrees) in the UK, which show a clear inflection point around 2012 and continuing since.
