So if Shoebridge is a garbage person, doesn't that make Albanese, Wong and Marles each the equivalent of that giant garbage compactor on the Death Star? Only one of them would set "national interest" as _not_ selling F35s to states to kill Gazan toddlers. Guess which one?

Except it's always been "national and strategic interest" as seen by self-selected stakeholders, hasn't it? I guess there are Australian officials to think it's in Australia's national and strategic interest to allow F-35 parts to be shipped to Israel (even if they end up killing Gazan toddlers).

Riddle me this - right now the Greens have the balance of power - should the ALP negotiate with them or the LNP? You love hypotheticals, I’ll stick with the fucking reality that the ALP decided the life skills my daughter receives don’t improve her wellbeing and so should not be funded.

Let's say Albanese/Chalmers/Marles does their best Bill Leak impression, falls headfirst off a balcony, and gets possessed by the evil spirit of Billy Hughes. Of course they're _entitled_ to try to pass legislation with PHON support. That's not exactly "governing from the back benches", is it?

A key difference between PHON and the Greens is that one has been known to racially discriminate against people like my wife and the other never has.

When folk think "we end up like Israel", they think of genocide and bombing babies. Not five (5!) parties in a coalition government. Isn't that another day ending with "y" in Europe?

Not everyone is happy with David Shoebridge's ascension to the leadership of the Greens. (It's true about my mum, FYI. She's also far, far better on trans issues than Drew.)

I’ll ask the new Greens leader, David Shoebridge, the same question I asked Mehreen: will he issue a statement supporting a two-state solution, condemn Hamas and criticise the use of “globalise the Intifada”?
And how are the Greens going to fight One Nation when they think a man can be a woman, won’t criticise Hamas and continually wear keffiyahs and have no idea how to communicate with ordinary Australians who aren’t young, live in the inner-city and have university degrees?

Drew Hutton the Greens already condemned Hamas in 2023. What's the point of condemning it again, especially as Israel has killed more 70 times the people in multiple countries in the last three years that Hamas did on one evil day?
Seriously, if three years later of multiple Israel-led homicides in not just Gaza but the West Bank (and Lebanon!) still leaves you thinking "condemn Hamas", I say you're a man living in the past. Even my mother is more adaptable than you (and she's four years older!)

I'm surprised an US LGA can go "Rightio" to a drone delivery service without getting the feds involved (their equivalent of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority) to greenlight it first.

L. Ron also achieved military command, even if he wasn't very good at it; his sole bit of combat was depth charging an underwater iron ore deposit, thinking it was a Japanese sub. It's bad being relieved of command after 80 days, but that's 80 more than Elon ever got.

How do I watch TV? Like so many people (I guess), by random cut up scenes on YouTube. I could throw money and time at streaming the entirety of "Better Call Saul" - it's pretty great, by all accounts. At the end, I can't be bothered. Give me a good, 2 hourish movie instead, almost every time.

Looking at the list makes me think "Watching TV is an active investment in time that I have chosen not to do". There are so many series here I have not watched at all, and there are no series listed I've watched in their entirety (with the exception of Shōgun).

Salary caps sounds like a particularly USA problem. Other countries have no problems paying senior public servants more than their politicians. The Australian PM gets 600K AUD/yr. His cabinet secretary gets 1M AUD/yr. (Whether you get value for money is a separate question.)

You're on the money, Mark. (And even many migrants aren't having that many kids either. In 90s, houses got down to 3 bedrooms, but the amount of one-parent families these days means the spares are used for offices/study rooms/toy rooms, and so on.)

I'd actually like to expand the number of countries where visitor visas aren't necessary at all. Yes, I'd include VN.

Peter Murphy @peterkmurphy.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Here's my policy for the Greens - make all entry visas cheaper and easier to access. (And that includes Visitor visa 600, for the record.)
As it says: Key Findings: Australia Visa Fee Increases from 2015 to 2026 for Student 500, Partner 820, Skilled 189 and Graduate 485. Going up from left to right, but really climbing after 2022, when the ALP got elected, and accelerating upwards in 2025.

Generated by Mistral AI, so numbers could be shaky. But it does seem to point to what's happening.

Arguments about the "Media" are a distraction from what's happening in my party: we're too boring and we don't cut through. Mass media is biased, but mass media isn't so mass these days; folk don't get their news from TV or newspapers so much these day. Kos Samaras sounds mostly on the money.

Context lost

The media has given the royal commission’s first interim report similar treatment to allegations of bias in ABC and SBS coverage. It contains 14 recommendations, five of them confidential, largely concerned with security, policing, counterterrorism coordination, firearms and the failures surrounding the Bondi attack.

The Spectator Australia complained that it was “the report that won’t name the problem“, arguing that the inquiry’s commitment to social cohesion prevented it from identifying radical Islam and its alliance with the hard left as the true drivers of antisemitism.

At the other end of the ideological horseshoe, The Shot — an attempt at a satirical website for people who found Facebook comments insufficiently moderated — published “The royal commission into the hurt feelings of genocidal psychopaths“, followed last week by “Updates from the Royal Commission into the selective outrage of Zionists“.

One side thinks the commission is concealing the truth to protect Muslims. The other thinks it is manufacturing a lie to protect Zionists. Social cohesion has been achieved, provided social cohesion means everyone agrees that a sinister religious minority is secretly controlling the process and merely disagrees over which minority.

These framings are not morally equivalent. The Spectator’s determination to explain Australian antisemitism primarily through radical Islam can obscure neo-Nazis, conspiracy movements, white nationalism and antisemitism on the non-Islamist left. But The Shot responding to an inquiry dominated by Jewish Australians describing abuse by collectively presenting them as genocidal psychopaths is not media criticism either. The headlines I’ve cited are practically demonstrations of antisemitism.
