I believe they have been trying to Latvia, Lithuania etc, to reopen access for Belarus to ocean ports for some time. So seems like this has been in the works for some time. But yea, even then, they don't have much to spare.

There are also provincial taxes which are typically much higher than state taxes. Not complaining about them, but they are part of the equation. Meanwhile property taxes tend to be higher in the US.

I think, on average, a cop arrests somebody every other month. And, if you take the special vision zero team (who write most traffic tickets) out of the mix, each cop issues one ticket per month. And they complain about firefighters!

I sort of like the jury duty approach. At least for a portion of government. You get picked and then have to put in a couple of years. Probably get a much more "representative" government that way.

Evaporative cooling. They evaporate water to cool down the refrigerant more cheaply than just blowing air over coils like a home air conditioner does.
