I'm a software guy, typically drinking coffee. More specifically, you can find me thinking about how to use AI better, cybersecurity, and software development. In the evenings I hack on audiobrevity.com to help me keep up with awesome podcasts.

Is the excuse "the lag in my VM is making me type worse" the equivalent to me complaining that my N64 controller made me a worse Mario Cart player back when I was a kid? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - but I sure do have a lot more typos...

One of the greatest joys I find in life is writing release notes that people actually want to read. I see you Slack...challenge accepted.

I'm struggling to get what feels like a simple #ios app through app review. They're rejecting it because I have a way to skip asking for access to contacts if they want to just add their friends to the app manually. Anyone have any tips? Here's my latest build: testflight.apple.com/join/bqtM8Cjg

…or help them realize they need to run to the car and find their license plate and VIN _before_ they get connected. Or maybe pull up that order number, too.

Transparency is key: "hey, while you're waiting on a human, want to help prepare your conversation with jotting down what the issue is" => "oh, have you read this post (could be dynamically generated based on RAG)? It might help while you're waiting." ...but having a human-in-the-loop is key ATM.

As I'm learning different ways to help people try out Audio Brevity, I'm experimenting with more features free but fewer quantities of those features. There's no feature behind a paywall, now. Let's see how this works.

We had that for a bit during a storm. Oddest thing only getting one of the legs in. I may or may not have moved a few breakers around to get the coffee maker on. ☕️ Might be time for battery backup on the house! :P It was decently easy and quite DYI when we did it.

AI failures stem from bad design, not bad AI. Over-reliance is the real risk. AI should aid, not replace, humans. Poor safeguards are an engineering failure.

I know I’m supposed to like it but when I had it go slightly awry in production during a migration I couldn’t manage it like I’m used to in Tableplus I haven’t touched it since… I need to try it again but not being able to use my favorite tooling I’m accustomed to has made it hard to want to.

As with all things, it depends. I agree for most of the cases in the comments. TDD can be really handy if you're working on a small bit of key functionality. A few small tests can help you quickly validate you hit your edges once started. Or verify Cursor/CoPilot wrote it right. But overall, agree.

Decoder talks about how #podcasts are starting to become a b2b thing. audiobrevity.com/share/9IWQVA... I spend a bunch of time using podcasts for research and I absolutely agree with the sentiment that CEOs talk differently on a podcasts than in situations. It's a great way to find nuggets of gold.

I think yes, myself. That's typically what I'm doing, trying to carefully not then have data back up my gut but either disprove or prove it... but I'm curious from an industry expert if that's seriously bad practice.

Peter Ramsing @peter.coffee · 09/12/2024
When you're looking through the evidence, that's the piece I'm curious about... are you using gut feels when you're looking those indicators? I guess the answer probably is a bit of "it depends"? I guess what I'm getting at is whether it's valid to dive into a finding based on gut feel.

Peter Ramsing @peter.coffee · 09/12/2024
@taggart-tech.com when you're hunting how much of your research is "gut feel" vs "empirical data"? For example: "that looks like more Teams usage than what feels right" vs "Teams logs have increased 164% from last week" (or insert other example...)

I had a bugger of a time last night finding a #laravel migration that ended up being in my vendor directory. I wrote about it here: peter.coffee/hidden-larav... Hopefully it helps someone else since I can't seem to find much documentation about it... If anyone has any docs about this I'd be curious.
