look, I know all of us outside the US hear way more US news than is healthy, and I try not to just post random links to US goings-on... but seriously, today's episode of What Is Even Happening Over There is one for the ages

Enforce the laws! It's not complicated. If OpenAI staff commit crimes, treat them the same way as anybody else committing the same crimes. Whether they commit their crimes manually, or by using automated crime tools, is irrelevant.

This is an absolutely outstanding tweet in a great thread, do read up and down. People with tech backgrounds who are newly encountering a problem do tend to think themselves the first ever to really think about it.

There seem to be a lot of people who think that how any given frame reads visually is basically accidental, and that evocation - "does that look kind of like..." - isn't something that photographers really think about much.

100%. This has been planned out very precisely and deliberately. The composition of the frame and the way the light falls have been meticulously arranged to give exactly this effect. Whoever did this knows exactly what they are doing and on a technical level they're very good at it.

Speaking with my photographer hat on, there is absolutely no chance - none whatsoever - that any aspect of this was accidental. This would have been carefully conceived and executed, which I think is the correct word here, to achieve precisely this effect.

I see Cadbury is trying to make Christmas eggs happen.
A shelf display of Cadbury "Smash Bauble" confectionery, presumably a valiant attempt to repurpose an Easter production line.

Nilay Patel got it exactly right when he talked about the epidemic of "software brain".

And when the economics guy says "When you look at the tasks where AI has made much progress, they are the ones where you have ground truth" you know he's partly thinking about Alphafold; but even on its own terms, the idea that protein structure actually has a "ground truth" is extremely shaky.

Everybody is making fun of this but bear in mind that in those days "patent medicines and soothing syrups" included stuff like laudanum and heroin.
Early 20th century advertisement for heroin, "the sedative for cough".

(1) ask the White House for a big list of all the things that make it hard for them to get things done; (2) implement as many similar things as possible.

"Floundering is the worst of all possible worlds" is a great motto. You can't get by on loss aversion alone, in politics as in life.

Of course every court in the world is always overwhelmingly packed with supporters of the home player, but my word the crowd on Arthur Ashe is insufferable.

Zverev just plays the best American style tennis around at the moment, which makes it hard for American players trying to beat him.

I vaguely remember hearing a presenter on some older-demographic radio station coming out with something along the lines of "...and that was a new song by a nice young lady called Taylor Swift". Anyway, let's check in with cinema news from The Economist.

I've got through a *lot* of stuff with Copilot in the last couple of weeks. It is very good, provided you already know broadly what you're doing.

FWIW I've read quite a lot of his other books too and he's always worth reading - Perfect Exposure springs to mind, and maybe Fifty Paths - but there's nothing else quite as essential as Photographer's Eye really.

I've been taking the view that they need to develop a resistance to the psychological pressures and tricks the mobile and free-to-play games employ to drive engagement and extract payments, and they may as well do it on Roblox (and no they can't have 100 Robux to buy the golden pickaxe, or whatever)

My kids could be exploring my carefully-curated Library of Alexandria of the absolute pinnacles of videogame culture from the last forty-odd years, but mostly they don't.

Peter Hewitt @petehewitt.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
100% agree. Maybe I'm out of touch, but everything popular on Roblox is the absolute dregs of empty-calories number-goes-up engagement-bait mobile game design, with meaningless "rewards" flashing everywhere instead of gameplay.

Incidentally, and semi-relatedly, my absolute favourite observation in that book is that you can carry your audience through unconventional technique and they will usually follow *as long as it looks intentional*. The minute they think something you've done is a mistake, though, you've lost them.
020
Peter Hewitt @petehewitt.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
I think a lot about Michael Freeman's seminal instructional book The Photographer's Eye. For him, increased skill is more or less synonymous with increased control over the things in the frame and their mutual relationships and implications. Most of the book boils down to "intention is important".

Secondary consideration, but reading Dean's ramble there, I got the distinct impression of somebody who is massively overconfident in his own ability to write. If he'd got ChatGPT to write that for him, at least we'd have had sentences.

We need to consider the business model and financial situation of OpenAI with as minimal residue of sentiment as possible. Really sit with it, you know? Stare it coldly in the face.

As a schoolboy I was very Discworld and *extremely* They Might Be Giants, and yet somehow it took me decades to catch on to the 'We're Certainly Dwarves' joke in Soul Music.

for me quite a few of the Beethoven scherzos in particular really benefit from a frisson of danger, a feeling that the conductor and players are just barely holding on & not *quite* letting it spin out of control. People have been arguing forever about his tempo markings of course.

BBC News is not what it was, but the BBC still has the Proms, CBeebies, and Radios 3 and 4.
000
Peter Hewitt @petehewitt.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Stephen is of course entirely correct. There certainly was a time when the Proms were Tory-coded, but the arts parted company with the Conservative Party some time ago and these days they're not really on speaking terms.

I think his view boils down to (1) he himself is acutely, existentially sensitive to that 0.1% difference; and (2) EU bureaucrats are know-nothing barbarians, wholly ignorant of the sacred mysteries of User Experience, motivated mainly by jealousy of American technological supremacy.

The hill I will die on: post-launch content additions to games almost always end up feeling weird and unsatisfying, like if a film director kept going back to add extra scenes and change existing ones. Make the game and leave it be; improvements and additional content go into the sequel.

Bugs me - and I'm sure it bugs you too - that the ramp is perfectly aligned with the disc of the sun in the phone footage, and not in the long-lens shot that they've gone with. Did they compromise on that for the sake of getting the skateboarder centred, maybe?

On the other hand we had a Dualit kettle which was an overpriced kitchen ornament and ours stopped working inside three years.
010
Peter Hewitt @petehewitt.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
I feel like a class traitor for admitting it but the Dualit way really is the only correct approach: set the dial by hand from zero every time you toast something. Once you can intuit the various parameters, within two weeks or so, it's perfect toast without fail. Impossible to go back.

Well, I got the big camera out in case the sky cleared, and guess what, it didn't. Now lightening again here. See you again in 30 years, or whatever.

"Our analysis reveals just how much higher education has relied on international fees." "The economic impact of the decline in foreign students is laid bare by Sunday Times research." Heck of a lot of preening considering everybody with the slightest interest has been shouting about this for years.

Looks like engagement bait probably? As opposed to a genuinely held terrible opinion, though I grant you it can be hard to tell. (There's basically nothing else on my X feed nowadays, the odd time I find it necessary to search for something on there.)
