Reminds me of a chapter in Naomi Klein's Doppelganger where she talks about autistic kids historically being seen as stolen and replaced with monstrous doubles. (She ties this into the modern vaccine panic.)

Notes and links from 7 Oct: notes.peteashton.com/2026/10/08/not… Yesterday I popped to the allotment with my sister for a bit. Had fun getting the scooter to go up the muddy hill — it’s really not an off-road vehicle, but it made it. Was a nice sunny afternoon af...

Everything should always be selectively applied. Language and symbols are imperfect shorthand abstractions and applying them dogmatically is dangerous. And we do condone the Swastika in the west when it's used in non-Nazi contexts, if very carefully, in both cases because context is everything.

Um, a significant part if not majority of the non-western world would think of it as a symbol of peace.

Fox thief in the hedgehog cafe: youtu.be/73PQQrxL4T0 After the mouse heist over the weekend we noticed the bowl had been moved from it's normal position at the end of the tunnel and appeared to have been licked clean. Turns out the hedgehog cafe is not as fox-proof as we'd like. Time for a rebuild!

It's either that or make it up as I go along with no plan (or as I prefer to say, iterate based on trial and error). An actual plan tends to paralyse me, so if I want to actually achieve a specific thing I need to 'see' the whole thing and then fill it out.

Obviously I'm not doing what you do, but I do find I tend to mentally draw a big circle around whatever it is I'm trying to do, figuring out the edges and rules of what it is/isn't, before stumbling around within that seeing what takes shape. Possibly analogous?

All laws are mostly enacted by consent. It's impossible to enforce something universally without if unless you go dictator, so best to push hard for change to norms with light touch. I reckon.

It's probably one of those generational things that will take a long time to settle into cultural norms. We've got, what, 70+ years of motorist supremacy to undo? Can't expect behavioural change this quickly, but it will come.
