It’s a super tight margin industry. If they can save money they can, so probably skipped the updates. They cheap out on stores as much as possible when building them, and stores in financial difficulties like Morrisons skimp on maintenance etc. now it’s happened they’ll all now be checking though…

See my other reply. Several cabinets (fridges) are attached to one external plant unit, turning 1 off or adjusting the temp can stop a whole system failing, and losing all the stock. Stores aren’t staffed 24/7 engineers can take hours to arrive. These systems have been in for decades without issues

There are several banks of fridges (or cabinets as they’re called) connected to external plant on the roof/delivery yard. If one of those plant units is struggling a cabinet or two can be turned off, or temps raised slightly to reduce load and prevent complete failure until an engineer can attend

Never heard it happen in the few decades these systems have been in use, so pretty reliable so far. I suspect hot summer weather knocks out more fridges every year…

Who sits in the store overnight then?
000
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Who turns that knob or knows the alarm is going off at night when the store is closed/unstaffed? Do they employ someone overnight every night in every one of their hundreds of stores? These systems have been in place for decades and this is the first instance I’ve heard of them being hacked.

Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
They’re not connected to “the internet”, they’re connected to a central monitoring station that watches them 24hrs a day, in case they fail while the store is closed/unstaffed. The monitoring station can adjust settings too.

Telling airport border staff/security your going there in the middle of summer to go snowboarding does raise a few eyebrows. And gets you a very thorough bag inspection… (Once upon Landgraaf was the biggest indoor slope)

I’m in Manchester, it’s so flat, I live in a place called “…o’ th’ height” and that’s a really optimistic name for what would have been at most a gentle hillock, which gives you an idea of how un-hilly the rest of the place is! 🤣

The reinstatement of the line through the Scottish Borders from Edinburgh doesn’t help people who don’t live in the Borders.. Actually you’re wrong. By taking the high speed intercity trains off the WCML, all the other towns who have services that use the WCML can have more frequent services

Oh and hs2 would face saved 40mins London<>Birmingham, 1hr London<>Manchester and almost 1hr Birmingham<>Manchester, so a bit more than a “few minutes” 😉
100
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
HS2 wasn’t about getting to London “a few minutes quicker” it’s about adding lots of capacity. What’s the point of living near a station if no trains stop there frequently as the track capacity is taken up by intercity trains flying by? Shifting those to hs2 means more stopping local/regional trains
100
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Why build a standard line for approx 90% the cost of a high speed line, and get less benefits and have to run more trains to release the same capacity? HS2 (in full!) is an improvement to the existing network, it relived the overloaded and congested WCML allowing more local/regional/stopping trains.

Well she probably bought the first 100 herself, so the question is, which Reform members bought the other six?

There’s plenty of space to implant a good cycle network around there, the estate and surrounding areas have nice big wide roads and even more generous grass verges, you wouldn’t need much, or lose any road or pedestrian space, they could do that too 🥕rather than 🪾

Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
To be fair, he’s paying to store his private property off the road, rather than just dump it for free on the road (or pavement) like most people

It’s almost a BL era type cock up, like not making the Austin Princess a hatchback, or making the Allegro taller so it could accommodate an off the shelf heater…

I’d expect rear hinged (suicide) rear doors, maybe not RR but at least RX-8 style.
Doors open on a red car. Rear door is hanged backwards, no pillar between front and rear doors

They all yearn for a non-existent past in a very gammony way… They want OTHER PEOPLE to buy nothing but old XJs forever. It’s weird.

I guess with the government already in control/plans to move depts there, it makes sense, that and it’s already built, GAS won’t be until after the next GE.

Whatever’s left the administrators use to pay the creditors. It gets divided up amongst creditors depending how much they’re owed and any preferences they have. It’ll be pennies in the pound. The Gov has no ongoing liabilities/debts.
000
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
No not at all, you’ve misunderstood here, I’m saying they take on NO liabilities. The company goes into admin, the Gov buys the assets (and re-employes the workers) puts it into a new water co. No liabilities. The administrators use the money raised to pay their fees and running costs in admin 1/2
100
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
They’re going to get a hair cut, pennies in the pound they’ve invested/lent, but that’s the risk of lending/investing, but its also legal the way and they have been “paid” what they’ve been owed. Just nationalising and seizing the assets, or at other extreme taking on the liabilities, are both wrong
000
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Any administration can run TW as a going concern so customers don’t lose out. The company can be made bankrupt, but through a pre-pack deal, where the government buys the assets, takes on employees. Creditors get value of assets minus cost of administration divided up based on preference/money owed
210
Peter Wells @pete-wells.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Thames water the company may be worth zero but its assets are still valuable. It’s those assets that need to be paid for to pay off any creditors (who will only get pennies for every pound they’re owed)

Tierra del Fuego itself has some interesting history as to who it belongs too… the Argentinians and Chileans nearly went to war over it in ‘86.

Until Argentina invaded the Falklands in 82 there was next to no military presence on the islands. What’s there now is just about enough to do its job of deterring a second attempt. The UK has a base there to defend to Falklands, rather than we keep the islands to have a base there…

Ironically the closest comparison I know of is at Tesco where historically shop floor workers (grade B) were paid less than checkout operators (grade C) where the “discrimination” was the other way round as the latter were mostly female. Tesco scrapped this in late 1990s though.

The conflation comes from Asda, where the “warehouse” workers worked out the back in the same store where the “shop workers” worked on the shop floor. The ambulance chasers then tried to apply that same definition to “warehouse” workers in remote DCs which is obviously not the same.
