I sincerely believe that the most important role of education and educators is supporting students in the process of becoming fully themselves; the idea that the process can be skipped, outsourced, or boiled down to serve a strictly rational economic self-interest is just so sad.

I’ve been trying to record an observation of a unique organism every day from the Chicago area forest preserves and river trails - Here’s some of my favorite photos from June. #nature #inaturalist #mycology #biology #biologyteachers #science #naturephotography

My NIH study section that was to meet tomorrow was one of those canceled. This represents many months of work by the applicants and by the NIH staff and reviewers. Devastating is the correct word.

The more I read and learn about sea slugs / nudibranchs the more questions I have. If we didn't live in a capitalist hellscape I'd be happy to study the absolutely buckwild biochemistry that has to be happening in those organisms.

You can really see the homology and the shared pentaradial symmetry in this urchin test. Can immediately see the other echinoderm like features

Absolutely loving @edyong209.bsky.social ‘s An Immense World. Page after page of what to me is a distilled flavor of wonder that made me study biology and biochemistry in the first place. Capturing the impossible order, symmetry, and parallels in defiance of entropy. Such beautiful examples.

Sort of exciting to start fresh, hoping to find some like minded folks to follow.
