In Living Cover: Record Selfies Projest
This is a deeply personal project that began in 2016 as a way to entertain myself, and also my ex, when I staged Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweat's newly released Self Titled record. Two Clash records followed in quick succession and I started posting them on Instagram as a joyful way to honor favorite records, and by finding ways to insert myself into iconic imagery-whether physically or by some personal touch. Only much later did 1 create a dedicated Instagram account (Record Selfies Project: In Living Cover) with a professed "low budge, high praise" ethos-the effort has always embraced a DIY aesthetic, using only my phone and a little creative ingenuity (my favorite prop has been using sneakers and hair ties to secure the phone, instead of a tripod).
When you're young you find your tribe, you have a shared interest in music and art and clothing.
It makes you feel seen. I grew up in rural North Carolina, where there was no art, no music, and going to a punk show was a 2.5 hour drive each way. In such situations, tight friendships are born: we had each other and looked inward to make our own fun and create our own music
Music saved our lives.
It's the tether that has bound us together for over 30 years and even beyond the grave.
Sammy's covers of songs from the records I create encapsulates us-our tribe, our friends, our story. This project is personal, but it is also generative and accessible: everyone can relate to music being the thing that binds us together, just like art (we're all nerds for something). It shapes who we are into adulthood and beyond.
You might notice in images like Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate that I left a corner of the prop visible. That intentionality and DIY aesthetic is exactly what this project is about. We all take ownership of these records that matter so much to us, and that's kind of like a litte signature for me-of leaving my imperfections intact. I's my way of taking ownership of where …

If you need a fun cool activity this afternoon- 5:30 is the opening of Carroll gallery More Humans show at Newcomb Art Dept. Laura Ritchens our fab curator was inspired by students booing mentions of AI in commencement speeches and Pope Leo’s encyclical on the human. Whimsical and beautiful.
Installation view of a gallery, with multiple artworks, reflecting on the nature of humanityMore Humans was inspired by online articles about the exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future at the recently re-opened New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. That exhibition features work by over "200 artists, writers, scientists, architects, and filmmakers." According to the website, New Humans explores:
... how dramatic technological and societal changes have spurred new conceptions of what it means to be human.
Although I have admittedly not seen that exhibition (I do hope I get a chance to go! Limagined a gallery full of hybrid, techno, cyborg figures. My mind wandered to how a similar show might take shape differently in New Orleans. How could we explore what it means to be human without falling into romantic clichés about folk cultures in New Orleans or sweeping generalizations about the tech industry here?
On the news I saw crowds of 2026 college graduates booing the mere mention of Al/artificial intelligence, and I understand their frustration and apprehension. Pope Leo wrote about Al companies as representing a new form of colonialism in his encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, and I appreciate his advancing the important conversation.
In More Humans you will find a wide range of artists and approaches, and I want to thank all of the artists for their leaps of faith by participating in an exhibition with as broad and essential a theme as examining what it is that makes us human.
-Laura Richens, Curator

While I sadly am not staying here, I am totally in love with Macaos hotel central, lovingly restored recently. This is the 1928 rooftop bar and apparently the rooms are decorated in 1920s/30s/40s vintage furnishings. A handsome young man in suspenders just made me a zombie and it’s just delightful.
