.@cathyyoung63.bsky.social: "Canadian “heterodox” pop psychologist" is misnomer. "Canadian marketing professor" is more accurate - he really doesn't like to be reminded of this. Worth noting that his PhD supervisor co-published with Tversky, Kahneman's partner. All starting from same errors.

You don’t have to be in academia to do so. You merely have to be rigorous in the way you observe reality. More notes when I’m done." I look forward to more notes!

There are many ways to do falsification, and running an experiment is not the only way. Somehow, I have never heard this message. Anyway this is actually a super super hopeful message, because it means more folks can actually do science.

Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Specifically your explanations can’t guarantee that something will happen, only you can show that something absolutely CANNOT happen without a thing being present. And he argues, convincingly, that this approach to science goes all the way back to Popper.
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Brian’s goal with the book is to remind you that it is absolutely possible (and valid! and good!) to do science in this manner. We simply have forgotten that this is true. Of course it isn’t JUST “tell stories of case studies” — there is some epistemology involved.
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
“Watch carefully and tell stories of case studies” isn’t science. And yet “watch carefully and tell stories of case studies” was exactly how we got the theory of evolution.
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Somehow, in the many decades since Darwin, we don’t say this. We think: “oh, it’s only science if it’s a large scale experimental study” or “RCTs are the gold standard of science” or something of the sort.
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
It would be super strange, wouldn’t it, if you said “I am a scientist and the way I do my science is I watch animals (read: people) very carefully and then I write extremely detailed notes on what they do in their natural environment.”
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
On the one hand we see him as a scientist’s scientist. And yet on the other we do NOT espouse his methods: observing and then telling stories about animals.
100
Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
I want to say it’s about a new epistemology of science … but actually it’s about a very VERY old epistemology of science. My one sentence pitch: have you ever thought about the fact Darwin’s approach to science is actually quite … odd?

Brian Moon @perigean.bsky.social · 08/12/2025

In this way the GCs handled decision points without any need to consider more than one option. A Recognition Primed Decision (RPD) model was synthesized from these data, which emphasized the use of recognition rather than calculation or analysis for rapid decision making."

In over 80% of the cases the strategy was for the FGCs to use their experience to directly identify the situation as typical of a standard prototype, and to identify a course of action as typical for that prototype.

A total of 156 decision points were probed in this way. The major finding was that in less than 12% of the cases was there any evidence of simultaneous comparisons and relative evaluation of two or more options.

Each interview covered a critical incident that was non-routine and demanded expertise. The majority of incidents had occurred within the year preceding the interview. The interview probed the incident decision points: options identified, options selected, and reasons for the choice.

The method used included aspects of critical incident and protocol analysis paradigms. Interviews were conducted with 26 experienced firefighters (mean amount of experience = 23 years).

The domain of firefighting was selected, and the search focused on the decisions made by Fire Ground Commanders (FGCs) who are responsible for allocating personnel and resources at the scene of a fire.
