Just a reminder that Winston Peters has been in politics for 51 years. It's his job to make you think he and NZ First are about to do something he's had half a century to do.

Generation vape: How vaping hooked a generation that never smoked
They were too young to remember a world without vapes. Now thousands of young Kiwis are addicted to nicotine.

We're the world leader in youth consuming something that makes them sick. We're not the world leader in "too much race-based hiring" or "too many people confused about what defines a man". Like my 12-year-old would say: stop letting them rage-bait you.

"An estimated half a million Kiwis vape daily, according to the Health NZ survey, 138,000 of whom are 15 to 24-year-olds – making New Zealand the world leader for youth vaping rates."

Movements like Shoebox Christmas don’t survive if they rely on a few. Just like our marae and community can’t rely on one speaker or cook to take time off work every time there’s a tangi.

Nothing to move the country forward, nothing to address the harm being caused to people and planet, just "Nobody should be treated any different to the majority". That's how they got into power, and that's what they spent their time & our money doing.

I hope that in a hundred years, they look back at today and say "Wow, they had political parties whose entire platform was based on reducing the rights of marginalised groups."

"We're all one people" doesn't mean what you think it does when you're the majority and want everybody else to be like you. If that's too hard to think about, try: "We're all one gender". Please don't confuse kotahitanga (togetherness) with assimilation or sameness.

Remember, the 80/20 rule applies to unhappiness too. That thing making you think 80% of the world sucks is probably less than 20% of where and how your life is spent Shift your focus to the rest of your life for a bit* *Oversimplified, but that’s the point.

Winston Peters telling a Chinese man to go back to his own country David Seymour claiming different approaches for different groups is racism ...it's worth unpacking that with some journalling and books on history. That same school system didn't teach us much of ours.

If someone comes to our country, we should be allowed to retain our own identity. We should be able to continue practising our religion, traditions, or culture.

If a political candidate relies on racial-or-social division clickbait, they're compensating for a lack of useful political ideas & leadership. Clicks and likes are not the same as ability, values or actions to make our country better. Influencers are not politicians.

Your social media feed isn't a snapshot of what people in the real world think. It's a sales pitch of what big tech thinks you'll click. Get outside. Read. Wānanga. Talk to people. Self-determination doesn't live in an engagement-driven algorithm.

On that note, stop defaulting to US-owned Big Tech, built on others' values. Support local platforms like Te Hiku Media & Kaha Create - our Aotearoa, Māori-owned learning & development platform.  Check them out if you prefer to buy local:

If you're a leader and the development of people is important to you, then the default should never be 'how can I avoid paying and developing somebody in this role?'

Like Philip Whitmore said, this was a conversation about people - not the usual conversation about AI. Stopping and thinking IF you should use AI for this job, rather than HOW is the first opportunity to bring your values to the conversation.

Iwi are collectives who care deeply about the environment, have been here for hundreds of years, and will still be here hundreds later. Why would you not want a group with that timeline of thinking to help make decisions about the environment our species needs to survive?

perabarrett.bsky.social @perabarrett.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
That's the definition of short-term thinking. Votes & profit today; our kids pay the price tomorrow. It's not about special rights for Māori - that's just easy rage-bait for politicians to spin. It's about balancing the especially short-term thinking our political system creates.

perabarrett.bsky.social @perabarrett.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Politicians' decisions are shaped by that. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars every political cycle, undoing and then redoing the same things, for different voters. Local councils might not get lobbied as hard - but the cycles and influences are the same.
100
perabarrett.bsky.social @perabarrett.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Government and council cycles are 3-yearly. Politicians' high-salary careers depend on collecting the most votes from individuals.  Big money industries like tobacco, oil, alcohol, mining, dairy, tech etc. donate to the parties who help their industry profit.

Most iwi organisations work towards 50-200-year plans. Decisions on things like the taiao (environment) are made for those here today and our grandchildren. Future generations depend on those kaitiaki (caretakers) of the land today thinking about their best interests too

Imagine if tough-on-crime or growing GDP meant more spaces for sharing mātauranga and passion, so our youth grow up curious and excited to shape their potential. I know we got bootcamps instead - but that just makes this bit more important:
