Packed hearing, dodged questions. At the first-ever City Council hearing on Philly gov’s use of AI and surveillance, City Councilmembers asked powerful, basic questions to open up the city’s black box of technology, and were disappointed by the city’s lack of answers.

.@Google's breathless chase for AI dominance kicked their energy consumption up almost 50%! join @kairosfellows and tell them to commit to real climate action now: actionnetwork.org/letters/sign-a…
actionnetwork.org
Sign and send the petition: Hold Google accountable to their climate pledge
Google’s climate commitments are insincere. They want us to think they care. They hold enough power to really make a difference. But right now, Google is using smoke and mirrors to distract from the most powerful tools they have – but aren’t using – to fight the climate crisis. Google is still ignoring climate disinformation that rampantly spreads on its platforms, operating without a clear path to meeting their own green energy and water use targets, and forging sketchy partnerships with Big Oil that make fossil fuels more profitable. Most alarming, though, is the fact that Google executives are pursuing resource-intensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) at a pace that threatens to literally undo all the climate progress we have made as a country so far. We make Google what it is – by uploading our Youtube videos, using their email servers, populating Google docs and spreadsheets, and posting reviews on Google maps. Now, we’re sending a strong message to Google: the time to act is now. Google’s 2024 Environmental Report revealed that Google’s energy use climbed almost 50% in the last 5 years because of their resource-guzzling push for global AI dominance. Meanwhile, Google announced they were no longer spending money on buying other peoples’ reduced carbon (an often shady practice known as carbon offsets - Good news!!) -- but they are pivoting to another unproven tactic (carbon removal credits) that lets them avoid actually transitioning to green energy. It's time for Google to commit to what the world needs: ending the use of fossil fuels. Big Tech doesn’t have to side with Big Oil and Gas – the people who run Google make choices about how their corporation is run. But money talks. Google’s executives won’t turn down the opportunity to earn a quick buck unless a critical mass of users – the people who make them relevant by writing Google reviews, storing our photographs, sharing our calendars, and so on – hold them accountable to us and our future instead. Together, we can send Google a strong message. Better yet, thousands of strong messages. Join us in filling Google’s mailbox with letters about how their actions – and inaction – are impacting us. They have so much money, so much influence, and so many products and services that they control; we need them to get this right. Click “Start Writing” to send a letter directly to Google: Climate action is critical, and your superficial offerings aren’t cutting it.
