#ResistanceRoots Charles Houston was born on this day in 1895 in Washington, D.C. Known as The Man Who Killed Jim Crow, he was the NAACP’s first special counsel. He engineered a brilliant strategy to dismantle segregation in public schools, laying the groundwork for Brown v. Board of Education. /1
Charles Hamilton Houston. Houston was the architect and master strategist of the early Civil Rights Movement. While other icons led protests, he used the law as a weapon to systematically dismantle state-sponsored segregation from the inside out. He engineered the multi-decade legal campaign that turned the “separate but equal” doctrine against itself, laying the legal foundation that culminated in Brown v. Board of Education. He discovered, trained and mentored Thurgood Marshall, passing down the blueprint that Marshall used to finish the fight against Jim Crow. Ultimately, Houston did not live to see the legal victories of the 1950s and 60s, but his legacy remains foundational: He drew the map, built the machine and trained the generals who won major battles for civil rights.
