Spent the weekend doing a little bit of birding since it was supposed to be stupid hot and I wanted to either stay in my car or find trees. So on Saturday I went to Virginia Lake in Reno and walked around the park looking to see who was there. Surprisingly, not too many. 🪶

A feral Rock Pigeon stands on a white rock along the shore of the lake. It is half grey (across it's chest, belly, and wing tips) and half white (spotted white and grey head, white wings, and unseen in this picture, white back). The pink feet and purple iridescent neck feathers shine in the sunlight while a dull orange eye looks out over the grey beak.

A large blue-grey and white Black-crowned Night Heron perches on the rocky edge of the lake, it's long thin yellow legs supporting the long body. Dark blue-grey wings match the cap on its head where long thin white feathers drape down its back. A piercing red eye looks back at the camera.

A round black American Coot stands on the sandy shore of the lake, it's thick yellow legs holding up the bulky body. A white beak with small black band on the tip gleams in the sunlight with the distinctive red spot on its forehead matching the small red eye. The green/yellow lobed feet are out of view below the image.

A group of five Mallard ducklings swim together around the rocks near the shore. Their brown fluffy feathers mark them as still young (Mom is just out of frame on the left) but they are boldly exploring their watery world.
