Ninety years ago today, Oswald Mosley tried to march his Blackshirts through the Jewish East End. 🧵 He had thousands of uniformed fascists behind him and 6,000 police clearing the way. But the people of the East End got there first.

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

In today's read I discovered that James Pope-Hennessy, who wrote a bio of Stevenson and was the son of Una P-H the Dickens scholar, was one of Burgess's (many) lovers

I had a copy of the Willey book as an UG in the 1980s. Strange to think how small the field of cultural historicism was until New Historicism arrived on the scene.

One fact I liked: Burgess was going to write a PhD in the 17th c until he read Basil Willey's The 17th Century Background (which he reviewed) and felt it had all been said.

Reading Andrew Lownie's excellent biography of Guy Burgess. It's striking how interlocked the Cambridge Spies were with cultural and educational institutions. Burgess worked for the BBC, dabbled on the fringes of Bloomsbury and knew most politicians and journalists.

Krapp's Last Tape is a journey through an old man's life, filled with hilarious memories and hopes for the future, coupled with the mourning of lost love and unfulfilled ambition. This production, directed by Academy Award nominee Stockard Channing and starring David Westhead, tours globally throughout 2026/27. Revel in Samuel Beckett's classic play, as audiences are invited into Krapp's world of solitude, memories, dreams, elation and despair. Post-show 15-minute Q&A on selected dates noted with a 65-minute runtime.
