pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 22/09/2026You really can if there is a convincing Labour victory based on that as a central GE campaign issue of rejoining if Labour wins. In addition there will be the Greens, Liberals, SNP as a minimum in support of rejoining. 100 0
pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I reckon Labour will lead with rejoining at the next GE. But it needs to win very convincingly for it to stand a chance of happening, both as a mandate here, and as validation for the EU to go through the palaver again. 210 0
pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Expect it to be at the heart of the next GE campaign by Labour. It will help Labour win, and give a mandate for rejoining without another referendum. I think this has been Labour thinking for the past couple of years or so. 170 0

pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 11/08/2026We already have de facto rent control at the bottom end of the PRS (HB/LHA reference rents). Aside from this, I wonder if Zack recalls some of the unintended effects the last time we had broad rent control - illegal evictions, declining conditions? The true solution is to build (a lot) more. 000 0

pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 24/07/2026You can't assume they won't. It happened over a longish period before, and really until social housing was expanded hugely after WWII essentially. More social housing will ease supply/demand pressures, and remove many of the types of households which shouldn't really be living in the PRS. 000 0
pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 24/07/2026This Act provides for potential future rent control designated areas, following local authority reports next year. pencilneck.bsky.social @pencilneck.bsky.social · 24/07/2026It's simplistic just calling for controls. There's a form of rent control at the lower end, with local reference rents for housing benefit. History says broader rent controls may cause problems - illegal evictions, lettings outwith the controls (a black market), and terrible safety and conditions. 130 0
