Videogames as an artform have a problem with nostalgia. Not that people shouldn’t have nostalgia. Or that games shouldn’t draw from the past. But instead the weight we give to nostalgia.

When people go back to enjoy old games, we assume it’s a nostalgia thing. Do people assume that with books? Or movies? Or music? People certainly do go back in time with those mediums for nostalgia! It happens! I know when my sister is listening to certain cheesy old boyband pop or punk she’s often having a musical nostalgia trip! That’s cool! But we still don’t ASSUME, CONSTANTLY thats why people go back to stuff.

People like old stuff because it’s cool and interesting. It’s historic. People go watch Metropolis still, but how many people alive could even be nostalgic for a movie like that?

I almost want to see the word Nostalgia excised from discussions about video games – not because nostalgia is bad but because we over use it to the point where it’s actually harmful I think.

I mean I made IWBTG and am making an NES style game right now and even for me, the obsession with ‘nostalgia’ seems crazy.

Old stuff is cool. I know this because I see a lot of you kids on my tumblr feed talking about games I know you didn’t grow up with. It’s like finding your parents record or CD collection. Thinking the primary greatness of old games is bringing back memories of eating cereal and playing games on a saturday morning is a great injustice, even if those memories for some are perfectly worthwhile things.

Watching Street Fighter The Movie(1994) The Cartoon sequel(1995) and this is absolutely terrible. It's a Guile focused, deepfried, and GI Joe'ed SatAM adaptation of the game(s). It's not as bad as Malibu comics(1993) but that bar is pretty low.

Screen capture from the intro so you can assosiate this group of characters to good guys and other ones to be bad guys.

E Honda checks computer records in a wrecked harbor shack while Ryu, Chun-Li, Blanka and Dee Jay stand around the table. Somehow computer explodes from hacking too hard but printer still works.

Back in the day I played the demo so much I knew it through and through. Went to buy GITS but the store did not have it, neither had a second store. Ended up buying Tomba which is still one of my favs. Never owner or played more GITS. Someday.

I know games like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Batman have a lot of skins and costumes for heroes but I want to see some level of variations for villains. Give me Cesars/Ledger's Joker, SP2 Octopuss, 90s Deathsrike, AoA Sabertooth, etc. you get the idea.

Remember when selling a GTA to a kid was a big deal? Jack Thompson anyone? Stores got into problems if a child got theirs hands on San Andreas. Games got this easy to guard age rating. Now add funds with a paid card and nobody is asking what you're buying. I guess we're past that conversation.

This unclocks some memories. I have a very distant memory of seeing that tennis game being played in Game Over, a Finnish videogame tv-show in ~1994-1995 where they played CDi and PS1 games. You could call, dial-up, and play against other people live.

For m the biggest Xbox problem was that none of the bought studios made Xbox games. id makes id games, Bethesda makes Bethesda games, same for DFine, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Tango and specially Activision. Every Sony/Nintendo studio makes Sony/Nintendo games. Console identity is so much stronger

I can name like ~10 online stores that sell limited prints of older indie games. Prices are usually 30-40e anew. Mostly PS4 and SW1. It's mostly for collecting. I used to buy more, nowadays very rarely.

In Finland they HD remastered the show and for whatever reason (low quality audio?, royalties?) decided to redub the whole show(3 extra eps) with a reworked script and a new cast. So there currently exists 2 versions, The New One and The Good One.
