ok, here's another ethics use-case question for LLMs- I am finalizing a draft and had a quote in there but left out the reference. I can't figure out where it came from. Is it ethical to ask ChatGPT, etc. to find it? (making sure to check it's accurate) #academicsky

Raising Arizona. I don't remember when I saw it, but it was before my parents divorced so at most I was 8. I'm not sure why they let me watch, but I still remember that nightmarish bounty hunter on the motorcycle.

just got an article rejection after 2 years with the journal, two rounds of R&R. I don't mind rejections, but this was sort of ridiculous. Both for the lack of time and the editor wasting my, and the reviewers' time. #academicsky

I love the Halloween movies, and watch them each October. But I just can't get through The Curse of Michael Myers. Whenever Paul Rudd is there, I just see Paul Rudd. Maybe that's not fair. Did anyone see it before he became famous? What did you think of him?

I always found that a stretch. But here we have a situation where elected officials are attempting to actively prevent a religious community from living out their faith. That is a direct infringement on religious freedom. Where are the religious freedom advocates?

I remember conservative religious freedom advocates claiming marriage equality and the Affordable Care Act's provisions on contraception access were a threat to conservative Christians because it forced them to take part in a system that went against their values. 2/3

Muslim Americans push back as Republican politicians stoke anti-Sharia rhetoric ahead of election
Senator Ted Cruz targeted Muslim Americans at the recent Republican midterm convention, declaring that Sharia law “has no place in America.”

I've seen a lot of use of the term "hegemonic suicide" to describe Trump's policies. Has anyone written this up, maybe in a Foreign Affairs-type piece? It'd be useful for my lecture on hegemonic stability theory #academicsky

I feel like I'm seeing more awkward word choices in student papers. Words that aren't completely wrong, but also aren't the right word for the sentence and are not something you'd say in conversation. Is this AI? #academicsky

interesting. Although part of the argument seems to be that "the base" is increasingly anti-Israel, but "The Party" hasn't caught up yet. Have you seen any evidence on that?

so it's a part of the educational process. We do need to instill in students the importance of norms and rules. But we also can't write them off as uniquely bad students.

and Xillennials or elder millennials like me also did this. I didn't like the way a Professor wrote an essay prompt so I wrote my own. And got points deducted.

Peter Henne @pehenne.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But none of this is unique to Gen Z, just the specific expression is. Younger millennials didn't like the idea of hierarchy in workplaces-I had a research assistant who drove me crazy by refusing to accept that I was in charge of the project.

But there's also the reality that if their boss asks for a report in a certain format and page length and they ignore that, it won't go over well. I've had academics claim that never happens in jobs but believe me, it does.

Peter Henne @pehenne.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
They may just be flailing for a better grade, but it does seem to reflect a sense of "why should we be doing this just because." So I've tried to explain-it's a sign of sloppiness, if they missed this they likely missed something else.

I'm pretty strict on this. I spell it out in the syllabus and make it clear they will lose points if they fail to follow the rules. And I always have students losing points because of this. Most accept it, but some argue, trying to claim it's not important enough for penalties.

the whole "iced coffee in interviews" thing is likely overblown social media rage bait, but it did get me thinking about the pushback I receive from students, mostly Gen Z, over formatting and citation requirements. THREAD #academicsky

I've gotten a lot, even though we don't have a PhD program. I can't tell if it's a scam, or just a scattershot attempt by international students. I did follow up with one request, and it ended up w/ them asking me to put my name on a paper they wrote and try to publish it.

and it's also worth thinking about what we accomplished that wasn't a paper. I spent lots of time with my kids, went on vacation with my family, went to see some great music (including a weekly Dead cover show I discovered), and started playing my own music again. That's something 4/4

there's a temptation to just ask every question to GenAI instead of struggling a bit first, which can degrade skills. And then there's the environmental concerns, although I still see debates about the exact impact of a query (2/2)
