Is it just CO2? we suggest Land use is a significant driver of increasing floods & droughts. These changes lead to rapid water loss from runoff, causing both floods and water scarcity. HESS paper@ doi.org/10.5194/hess... #LandUse #Floods #Droughts #ClimateAdaptation @pfiener.bsky.social 🧪

HESS Opinions: Floods and droughts – are land use, soil management, and landscape hydrology more significant drivers than increasing CO2?
Abstract. Floods, droughts, and heatwaves are increasing globally. This is typically attributed to CO2-driven climate change. However, at the global scale, CO2-driven climate change neither reduces pr...

If scientific assessment shifted from counting publications to expert evaluation of their quality, the tactic of citing junk papers to support bad arguments would lose its power. More open evaluation by the community, more retractions, and fewer metrics would make science harder to hijack.

Finding reviewers is hard and Copernicus journals thank all who dedicate their time to secure quality and rigor www.egu.eu/news/1252/eg... Note also that Copernicus is non-profit, and thus your reviewing time solely contributes to the advancement of science, and not for the profit of stockholders.

Are @zbmed.bsky.social aware of the negative reaction on social media to their just-announced contract with MDPI. There's a great many red flags they seem to have missed, e.g. deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/08/gues... deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/02/the-... + @hansonmark@bsky.social's account below

This is a catastrophe. While Finland has downgraded the MDPI and Frontiers journals to level 0 (meaning these publications are not recognized for research evaluation purposes), Germany has signed an agreement to promote publications in MDPI journals.

Tramlines in fields can cause a lot of runoff, carrying soil and pollutants to water. 🚜🌧️ Our paper, dedicated to the late Martyn Silgram, found using very flexible tyres and a rotary harrow to break up compaction can reduce this problem 🌱💧 #farming #environment #soilhealth shorturl.at/lEPB8

Mitigation measures designed to reduce soil compaction decrease the surface runoff, soil erosion and phosphorus losses from tramlines in agricultural fields

Coercive citations, citation stacking, and REVIEW MILLS (!) are alive and well. Hopefully, in soil science, we have learned to keep an eye out for these things, but not sure this is the case. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Should you stop drinking prosecco for ethical reasons?
Demand for the Italian white wine has surged in recent years, and increased production has led to soil erosion. So should prosecco join beef and others on the naughty list?

It is hard to predict when, where, and how bad #soil erosion events hit arable fields. But it just got easier - we trained a regional scale model to #nowcast #erosion events on individual fields. It works surprisingly well! Read more about it here: tinyurl.com/r7hyp5ze #soilscience #hydrology

Accurate estimates of the location, timing, and severity of soil-erosion events on arable land have eluded erosion-prediction technology for decades. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate how a mac...
