Retired settler in Treaty 6 area; love city life; walker and cyclist in a 1-car, 2-person house; it’s complicated. I don’t chat here.

I only got to reading this today while I was having lunch in Vetrina Cafe on 124 Street. They and your column are both strong arguments for welcoming immigrants. #notothenine

The patio basket tomato plant that Salisbury Greenhouses forced for spring has given up its last picking for the year. Home grown tomatoes will be on hiatus until late next month. However, if you like Roma-style cherry tomatoes, you cannot go wrong with the variety ‘Red Profusion’.

Since we’ve decided to go car-light(er), and I’ve sold my car to my son in Vancouver, here is my now-trusty steed sitting beside Elaine’s car.

Intermission at Freewill Shakespeare. It’s not STO, but it’s certainly a good-sized crowd.
The stage and some audience heads from behind at tonight’s Freewill Shakespeare performance.

My Alberta is big enough to include Jasper National Park. The SmithParkerRathAlexandre (SPRA) Cabal wants a customs station here. I say “No”.

My Alberta is big enough to include, without pretending to own, the trails and eagles of BC’s Gulf Islands. The SmithParkerRathAlexandre Cabal wants to put that in a foreign country. I say “NO”.
Beach along a nameless bay on DeCorcy Island, BC. The lower left corner is upland; it is bounded by a diagonal line of driftwood logs then sandy beach down to the water. Arbutus branch between green background and the corner of a trail staircase. Bald eagle partly hidden by leaves and with the forests of Vancouver Island behind it.

My Alberta includes, without pretending to own, Queen Elizabeth Park in central Vancouver. The smiithparkerrathalexandre cabal wants to block it out. I say “NO”.
Entrance to the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park. Siberian Iris in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park. The Lions’ Clock and a Kousa Dogwood tree across the summit plaza from the Bloedel Conservatory. Various unknown park visitors are present. Figures in the lock sculpture “Love in the Rain”, located in the gardens of Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park. BYO padlock and true love to join the fun.

Amsterdam has also done this in places. If I’d have known this thread was coming, I’d have taken a picture without the gigantic foreground.
A section of the Amsterdam tramway planted to grass with a huge paved sidewalk in the foreground.

Out chatting with the neighbour over frozen snow shovels, and we agreed that even though it’s still autumn we are more than ready for spring.

This was the longest car-miles-replacement errand to date: home to Bonton Bakery and return, about 13.3 km in all. And look at that perfect baguette rearing its handsome head above the pannier!

I started my car-miles-replacement program with a ride to the nearby Home Depot for replacement shopvac bags.
My new e-bike locked to the wheel barrow racks at my local hardware outlet. A shopvac in a dirty garage waiting for a new dust bag.

Here is a fuller view of the Bill Reid rose, still a bright spot in a darkening world.

If you didn’t care for the Bill Reid rose (or even if you did), here is the ‘Emily Carr” which also offers a bright spot in a darkening world.
A red shrub rose (the ‘Emily Carr’) blooms against a background of leaves and dirt.

This is the ‘Bill Reid’ rose, and it is a beacon of delight even in times of trouble.

I received and deposited the latest and last of my carbon price rebate cheques today. So ends one of the most sensible of the Trudeau approaches to addressing climate change. Now the decks are cleared for the GoC to bend a knee to Premier Smith and her oiligarch backers. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Hey all you country girls and boys coming back from WWII. Move to Edmonton and we’ll build communities, schools, etc. so you can be The Greatest Generation and raise the Boomers.

Although the world may be falling apart, the first crocuses have bloomed along the south side of my house.
