I don't think accountability is a great organizing issue. but it's ok bc there are a lot of good organizing issues. things will be worse if they get away with it, and theres a chance that if we push on this issue that they won't. but politics doesn't end if we can't win on this issue

when i felt this way about Bush, it just led me to be bitter and passive during Obama. I was shocked that nothing happened and that no one seemed to care elites might choose impunity and the public might be disorganized enough for a critical mass to trust elites when they say justice isn't possible

they dont seem to be saying it's _the_ problem. when i use an llm i have it set to use 3rd person and i found that it's led me to use it less and find it less annoying and off putting. seems worth studying

i was thinking a good response would be, "the clinical trial process is very good, we shouldn't be worried about AI exploiting a weakness in it" is there something wrong with the hypothetical on a deeper level?

This doesn't seem like how you normally post in the wake of tragedies. I don't know you, but I've had the sense that you would want to know if people who normally appreciate your posts found something you wrote to be in bad taste.

certainly if you feel israel's actions were justified, you're going to take offense to his statement. But since the majority of the country agree with him, they don't find anything wrong with it

Well I liked his statement. I thought it honored victims both in Israel and Palestine and it recognized the worth of every human being. It'd be nice to commemorate the victims of our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq too, but I don't hold it against him since both occupations have been over for years

if there's an off button, id be tempted bc i want to buy a railroad and electrify it. If im honest, i think 10m is the threshold where having more power would be bad for me personally. so the reasonable options are setting it to 23 days or 37.

a more parsimonious explanation is that they're lying, right? LL's say negative things about RC bc they want to end it and raise rents on tenants. They want to be able to evict people without cause by jacking up the rent. Developers join in bc LL's are their clients

You're basically saying that you can trick investors into investing in a market that won't yield their expected returns (so long as renters get fucked)? do you think landlords/developers expect that their buildings will still be commanding rent increases above CPI 10 years into the future?
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Ive never seen an explanation for why an investor (or voter) could believe both that up-zoning/industrial policy/permitting reform will cause rents to stabilize in real terms within the next 10 yrs but also that unless LL's can raise rents faster than inflation, new construction wont be profitable

pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
investors can try to "lock in" whatever they want, but in reality no one knows what will happen to market rent from 2037 to 38. Are you both arguing that investors will only invest if they they expect 2038 to be (100+cpi)% of 2037?

pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
how is my argument different when you sub out developer for landlord? So far you haven't engaged with the argument. Landlords always get to set the initial rent. RC is not a price ceiling. Why would a landlord pay a premium for a legal right to increase rent faster than inflation 10 years from now?
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
How can RC stop construction that isn't happening? MA has no rent control, so clearly there's other problems that cause the lack of construction. If those problems aren't addressed why should tenants have to pay extra money for landlords?
000 0
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
so developers don't need to know that rents will be rising after 10 years? bc if that's the case then why would not being able to raise rents faster than inflation after 10 years change their decision? RC only makes them less valuable IF market rents continue to rise faster than inflation
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
how does this respond to what im saying? if theres more building, rents will stabilize. but you're saying that if developers anticipate that this will happen then they won't build.
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
my argument is based on there being several metros where this is the case
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And in metros that have sustained construction growth, rents stabalize in nominal terms. Either you think developers are idiots who don't learn from these cases or in fact the market rent they can charge on opening is sufficient for the project to be profitable
000 0
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
personally i think developers are full of shit when they say they need to be exempted from RC. if they really thought it wasn't profitable without being able to raise rents faster than inflation after 10 years they wouldn't build bc that's an insane level of risk
200 2
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The cap is in line with most CA localities. The new construction limitation is only a third more restrictive than CA's state wide. but regardless, if a building can't pencil out unless market rent is increasing faster than inflation, then there's no way for the market to make housing affordable
200 2
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
only if after 10 years you expect market rates to rise above inflation. your pitch as a yimby is that if i support upzoning that won't happen, right?
100 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Many cities have similar rates just on older construction. What's your concern? New construction is allowed to set whatever initial rent it wants. If you think rents are not going to rise faster than inflation with up-zoning, what's it matter if landlords are prohibited from doing it?

idk kids are really fun. autonomy and novelty is high. i bet 30% of knowledgable people who don't resent those who know less would love it if they had 80 students max, and if the 10% highest need students had basic needs met. a lot of ppl dismiss the career bc they dont know much about it

I think it's likely that what's dissuading these teachers is large class sizes and real or percieved shcool dysfunction. social workers, stable housing for at risk kids, school integration, etc i think would bring in more qualified teachers than higher pay

ppl don't want to be uncool. I've made/done a couple of small things with ai. when ppl who don't use or like AI find out they seem mildly put off for a moment, but if they think the thing is cool they sort of just forget that thats how i made it. funny that this experience upsets these posters

My politics has changed so drastically, in ways that have little to do with policy, as a result of curiously engaging in an organization. People put off joining not bc of political disagreement but because their afraid of acting as a group rather than speaking as an individual.

segments of the liberal left have oddly gotten invested in balancing the budget (polarized against slopulism?) so i don't want to validate them but it would be funny. shutting down ai infrastructure build out would also create fiscal space

pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
hah it's all in the medicare expansion. Which is tricky when passing it bc it's a large increase but as an ongoing thing quite possibly deflationary and opens up fiscal capacity it's be funny (but maybe a waste of time) to put out a "fully costed manifesto", UK style

taken together, these arguments are evidence that there's something very wrong with the person making them. People find posters like Erb otherwise sensible so they want to deny the possibility that he's a genocide supporter

cutting off iron dome will make them use up all munitions on a defeated enemy instead of maintaining them for use against the only powers that have ballistic missiles, if Israel faces a security threat w/o the U.S. they will nuke tehran. and finally, appeasing this country is sustainable

right, "harm mitigation" relies on a series of increasingly preposterous claims: israel will probably stop flattening gaza and let aid in even if we do nothing, if we dont give smart bombs, they'll flatten gaza worse, they won't ever run out of 50+ y/o bombs,

Ive just realized theres no reason to follow them down the path. There's only one moral option, and it's the same as the only option for peace. If it doesn't work we reassess and try again. "trying to bait" isn't even right. they just like talking about how good the genocide is
010 1
pearless.bsky.social @pearless.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
that's what they're trying to bait ppl into. they paint a fantasy of israel holding the world hostage. ppl see themselves as engaged in debate with them and so answer how they would respond in such a situation. they respond, "wow you would nuke tel aviv?? you are living in an antisemitic fantasy"

theres an epidemic of "well what would you expect them to do?" premised on the idea that, in a situation where you cannot change the immediate outcome, the best thing to do is not make a fuss. I expect them to not compliment the prison PR guys for being "helpful" when they covered up a murder

"to be fair", "they were trying"? I appreciate this guy is trying to do good work but pretty depressing that the press is watching some hick prison guards cover the curtain as they torture a woman to death, asking "uh could you get back to us on why you're drawing the curtain"
