I wonder if said gatekeeping lulled consumers into a false assumption about the floor of quality available. So then, when they see a very cheap alternative online, they think, "How bad could a can opener possibly be?" never having experienced a truly cheap-ass can opener.

I actually knew a guy who kept saying he wanted to fight a grizzly bear. I believe he was earnest because he actually changed his mind after seeing a grizzly skeleton at the natural history museum. But up to that point, he was confident that he could win by outsmarting the bear.

I'm sure there's some argument about how this proves Stancil's point, but I think it really comes down to the how big the stakes are, which is different from person to person. There are a lot of people for whom $50k is very high stakes because of the immediate problems it would solve.

Yeah, it seems clear if you just switch the numbers at play. If the choice is guaranteed $1 or 50% chance at $20, most would take the 50% chance. If you switch it to $50 mil vs $1 bil, most would take the guaranteed $50 mil. It comes down to what amount people feel is life changing.

This feels akin to hoarding-type behavior. Instead of stacks of newspaper she's never going to read, she has gigabytes of transcripts of conversations she's never going to read. She'll say that she's running it all through Claude or whatever, but she'll never revisit it.

Also, because my monthly subscription is for 500 searches, I'm more thoughtful about what I search. e.g., I don't Kagi a movie to find the cast, I go to IMDB so I don't "waste" a search. YMMV, but I like that it introduces a bit of friction into my Internet engagement.

I second Kagi over DDG. I find the results to be more relevant. It's not as good as peak Google, but it's been a marked improvement current Google and DDG. With Kagi, I almost always find exactly what I'm looking for in the first result and the rest of the time it's in the top 5 results.

This actually hit my mom pretty hard because she bought her home so long ago, for so much less, that it had appreciated way more than 250k. It still made more sense to sell, but she owed a large chunk in capital gains.
