Some news today: Former Blazers legend Nic Batum just announced his retirement. Here's a classic moment from better days: Andre Miller's buzzer-beating alley-oop to Batum to complete a comeback against the Spurs in 2011. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIJb...

AFAIK the CBA doesn't allow for any contract shenanigans. I'm honestly not sure if the league could mandate any limitations to the Clippers spending ability, either. The NBPA wouldn't like that.

I'm legitimately stunned that the league threw the book, and maybe the kitchen sink, at the Clippers for the Kawhi situation. They may now be stuck in NBA purgatory for the better part of a decade.

I'm not much of a "misery loves company" kinda guy, but I'm not complaining that some other NBA team's ownership drama is taking over the headlines. Bonus that it's the Lakers.

It's a brave new world in the NBA. This feels like a roadmap for other teams to emulate. And without worrying about the luxury tax on these dollars. www.espn.com/nba/story/_/...

Sources: NBA has no evidence Ballmer funneled money to Leonard via sponsors
The NBA has found no evidence showing LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through team sponsors to pay Kawhi Leonard, according to three people with knowledge of discussions between the two sides in recent days.

I'm convinced the NBA Western Conference is going to be a little underwhelming this year, with a couple of elite teams, a couple of horrible teams, and a soft underbelly of decent-to-good teams who will fight for position in the standings all season. Portland should be part of that last group.

It seems like every single year on release day, I get told that the Blazers' schedule is going to suck this season.

It's wild to me that the Blazers' statement tonight explicitly stated they'd work in "in good faith". It's a sign of how badly they've lost the narrative battle. You typically don't need to use phrases like that if you've always been negotiating in good faith, or people at least think you have.

So, yeah, you should probably be watching out for astroturfing and "influencing" whenever you see social posts, comments, etc, pressuring the city to pass a deal ASAP and stoking fears and pressing emotional buttons. Critical-thinking caps on, please. www.oregonlive.com/blazers/2026...

They're hidden around, and they're mostly (but not always) amazingly unpleasant folks. It's hard not to draw parallels to other non-Blazers-related stuff that gets discussed online.

Ever notice that the vast majority of internet commenters who want to defend the new Blazers ownership can't seem to do it without acting absolutely horribly?

Alright, I'm finally catching up on today's Portland City Council meeting. I can't help but question if the Trail Blazers organization is negotiating in good faith.

This is your reminder that whenever the Blazers organization complains that someone else is wielding something (like a lawsuit) as a weapon, that's called "leverage" and the Blazers probably would like to eliminate that leverage. And they'd probably also be happy to use any such leverage themselves.

Note that I don't really bring up the situation of moving the team. Part of the problem (and I really should write about this) is that new ownership is so opaque that we're all just guessing at one of 5-6 different motives going on right now. By default, I assume it's about maximizing return.

Timmay @pdxtimmay.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I think it's hard to guess from the outside. Silver's job is essentially the PR guy for the owners, and I can't get a feel for how the owners are reacting to any of this.
2110
Timmay @pdxtimmay.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
It was a smart move by the City of Portland to publicly say that they're trying, but the team won't talk to them. While I don't think ownership cares about publicity, it's still bad for them. This allows the city to control the narrative that the organization isn't making even basic efforts.

I find it fascinating how many Blazer fans say "I really don't enjoy our TV broadcasts" while on Reddit, Portland's broadcasts are constantly listed among the best TV coverages in the league.

I want to revisit this. There are a group of fans who, at every Blazers transaction, say "This one is good!" or "Oh I don't like this one". That's completely missing the forest for the trees, which is that the Blazers are pinching every penny in a business where spending can make a real difference.

Much like current national news coverage and discussion, the ongoing Blazers situation has devolved into a transactional discussion about each new event happening ("I'm ok with this change!"), and less attention to what's happening with trends in the bigger picture. It's a little frustrating.

After a couple Summer League games, I have to say that I am not a fan of having one free throw instead of two. And I'm even less of a fan of one free throw instead of three. At the minimum, for three-pointers the player should be required to shoot that free throw from the top of the 3-point line.

As we see free agency start to wind down (we're reaching two-way signees and a couple noteworthy holdouts), we're at the point where we can say that Ja Morant was pretty clearly Portland's primary free agency plan. Any further Blazer transactions are because an opportunity opened up.

If nothing else, this provides a resolution to the years-old debate among Blazers fans about whether the Orlando Magic wanted to acquire Simons on his previous large contract. They even passed on him now, when he's looking at $6 million per season.

Just in case things go pear-shaped in Boston, this is your reminder that the Blazers own the best and worst of the three 2029 first-round picks from Portland, the Celtics, and Milwaukee.

I'm weirdly convinced that Matisse Thybulle will eventually return to the Blazers on a really cheap contract. I guess we'll see if there's a market out there for him.

I'll give credit to the Clippers for recognizing their situation, replenishing some future picks, and tossing out a team that won't be elite but will at least be pesky and annoying. Clearly a side effect of not controlling their own upcoming first-rounders.

I find it funny that the NBA redesigned free agency timing so it could happen in the daytime instead of midnight, then promptly renegotiated the salary system so that free agency itself is completely underwhelming.

As constructed, I think these Blazers will be exhilarating on some nights, and infuriating on other nights. I just don't know the ratio.

Everything about Portland's transactions say they're fine next season, but just kind of wonky in construction. So I'm curious if even some minor trades/signings are inevitable. They sure seem to be saying that Scoot and Sharpe are not the priority of the franchise, though.

Timmay @pdxtimmay.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
I was wondering if Portland would maybe slightly overpay (depending on your perspective) for Robert Williams III. You really had to squint to figure out how the team was going to shore up their front line if he left. It made sense for both sides to work out a deal before free agency.

To Blazers ownership, I have no doubt that Ja Morant makes sense. He was a star just a few years ago, has "reclamation project" written all over him, and he has no fear of a bad reputation for a player. It worked in Carolina.

Timmay @pdxtimmay.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Behind the scenes, I've been joking since at least April 1st that Ja Morant was the obvious pickup for the Blazers. Apparently the start of May was the first time I said it out loud here on social media.

I’ve suspected Ja Morant for over a month. He lines up with how new ownership looks at cost/value ratio.

I have absolutely no insight into it, but I'm increasingly convinced a Blazers trade is coming soonish. In the next week perhaps? I think all the teams involved want some level of finality before free agency winds down. Or at least, what's left of free agency at this point.

A couple details about Mike Williams: - He was named as one of the numerous finalists in Portland's coaching search this year. - He was a player-development intern with the Blazers for a few months in 2018.

I am increasingly convinced that the Blazers could just sit idle this summer, replace a couple of the guys who leave in free agency, and still slide up a couple slots in the West.
040
Timmay @pdxtimmay.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
The Blazers still have a few days to complete early negotiations with their free agents, if any can get done. It's pretty likely that Rob Williams III has interest from multiple teams, but I'm not entirely convinced there's a pent-up demand for Matisse Thybulle.
